100 MPH Gusts vs. Auxiliary Power: Arapahoe Basin Stays Open

Arapahoe Basin remains open and spinning lifts on auxiliary power after 100 mph wind gusts caused a widespread power outage in Colorado.

Nature threw a heavy punch at the Continental Divide this week, but Arapahoe Basin isn't flinching. High winds slammed the high country on Wednesday night, December 17, 2025, with gusts topping 100 mph in some areas. While the storm successfully knocked out the main power grid to the resort, it couldn't stop the lifts from turning.

Lifts on Auxiliary, Vibes on High

Despite the lack of main-line power, Arapahoe Basin confirmed that lifts were operational and running on schedule using auxiliary power. This grit is exactly why they call it "The Legend." A fallen tree on a power line on the west side of Loveland Pass was identified as the culprit for the outage. While the resort waits for Xcel Energy to repair the lines, the operations team has kept the mountain accessible for those willing to brave the conditions.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

While the lifts are spinning, things aren't exactly "business as usual" at the base area. If you’re heading up to catch some laps, keep these logistical hurdles in mind:

  • Limited Services: Food and beverage options are currently unavailable or extremely limited until power is restored. Pack a pocket sandwich and plenty of water.
  • No Rentals: The rental shop is currently closed as they cannot process orders without full power.
  • Ticketing & Passes: While the resort cannot fulfill new physical passes right now, they have committed to getting everyone on the hill. If you have a pass or want to buy a day ticket, the staff is ready to help you manually.

The Forecast Ahead

Conditions remain spicy across the Front Range. While the Wednesday storm has passed, Xcel Energy has warned of another potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) starting Friday, December 19, due to returning high winds and dry conditions.

At the Basin, the focus remains on the snow. Recent winds have been favorably "loading" leeward slopes, helping the crew pack down the routes as they eye the opening of the iconic Pali Lift. It’s a classic waiting game: patience, preparation, and a little bit of madness.
