The Garrett Russell Experience, Episode IV

There is endless knowledge waiting for us in the mountains. In the shadows of these vaulted fins, upon these precipitous beasts, within their cold depths, there is so much awe and so much wonder. Straight lines are stale. Beauty lies in the detours, understanding in motion. And the words are written in the wispy filaments and tufted streaks of snow we leave behind us. We are defined by our turns.

Garrett Russell is fixated on that resonating truth. When asked why he skis, he may answer quickly, “Because it’s fun” or “It makes me smile.” Both are true, but deeper meaning exists that Garrett holds onto due to introspection or shyness or perhaps a fear others will not understand. He spends his life seeking two-planked communion with the mountains and the prodigious truths that relationship imparts.

Skiing is not a selfish or vapid act, it is not devoid of meaning. It is a shared, sacred experience which deepens our connection to others and nature, existing as a vehicle for esoteric wonderings and unapologetic happiness. And it offers some spiritual alliance, some unspoken knowledge only the soul can decipher and understand. Within us, it creates a unity to the rest of the world stronger than anything else. Skiing gives joy freely, and under that is a guiding principle. A life spent seeking these moments, excavating their bedrock of knowledge, is a life spent within mindful connection. It is the essence of Garrett Russell’s experience.

The infinite value of his past and his hopeful future surge into Garrett’s brilliant elemental alertness. His turns are an outward expression of his internal, emotive navigators–his truest self. The faded echoes of his experience are amplified in his artful reactions to snowy terrain, and for a brief moment, he reaches a transcendent plane of inspiration.

Liberate the soul–investigate the full depth of the Garrett Russell Experience

Garrett will go to any lengths, travel to any location, to maintain the upkeep of his connected experience. His vitality is dependent upon his skiing, and his skiing is an extension of his understanding of the world in which he participates. Garrett is skiing. He elicits a deeper meaning to the passion. He is a liberated soul, sharing his knowledge with us, the lucky audience. Garrett Russell is an artist, is an athlete, is the skiing warrior poet.

In conversation, he edits himself, like all of us, when discussing his art. He self deprecates or jokes or closes his explanation with “…I don’t know…” in order to avoid internal and external judgment or questioning. But within the moment, within his action, he breaks free of these boundaries, these fears. He is set loose from the chains of self doubt. His movement is uncensored and filled with his primary connection, his inspiration, and his truth. He is liquid.

Stop. Look. Listen. Watch the artful trenching master work within the frosty deepness, upon the asperous giants. Watch him create arcing beauty in the terrain before us. Feel the inspired axioms swirling within you. And go, go now to another time, another place, go find the wisdom waiting within the turn. Find the sweeping raucous existence, find the limitless attachment, the great towering wonder, the happiness doubled by awe, find yourself within the Garrett Russell Experience.
