Greg Stump’s Blast From The Past: Episode 4

Hello everyone and welcome to Episode Four of Stumpy's Blast From The Past. In Episode Four we explore more of the "odd" comedy that I employed in my early films to hide the fact that I really did not know how to make a ski movie. Keep in mind that in 1985 there was still only Warren Miller making ski movies, so I had nothing to lose by being different from his format… and I mean different! Young unknown skiers and fresh music with a dose of "up yours" to the old guard of ski films was our mantra.

The Episode Four clips are the from 1985's Time Waits For Snowman. The loose (and I mean loose) premise of the film is that the evil Dr. Delam, president of Premature Ejecto bindings and Delamo Skis, was mad at me for snubbing his attempts to sponsor my movie with his clearly inferior and frankly insane skis and bindings. The resulting conflict was Dr. Delam trying to thwart our movie efforts. Keep in mind I was 24 when I made this film.

There is a great ski sequence amongst the clips I will show you in Episode Four. It's a bump sequence from Winter Park that really got me noticed by the Swatch and MTV people, as the rhythm and the edit and the skiing still hold up today.

Stumpy's Blast From The Past is brought to you by K2, Grand Targhee, Blizzardsnowstore.com and our new partner, Mt. Whitney Sports out of Bishop, California. The brainchild of Mammoth Mountain founder Dave McCoy's grandson, Davey (who you may remember from Dr. StrangeGlove in 1990 and again in a great Les Arcs powder sequence from Groove Requiem: In The Key Of Ski in 1991),  Mt. Whitney Sports makes gorgeous handmade skis as well as cool t-shirts and the fine apparel. Please give their website a look.

And please check out my online store where you can get all my vintage movies, posters, and other goodies at blizzardsnowstore.com.

Okay enjoy and see you next episode as we delve further into the funky stuff,

Stumpy

I've been making ski films since 1983, when I went to Chamonix with Glen Plake, Mike Hattrup, and Scott Schmidt to film "The Blizzard of Aahhh's." I've since made 24 separate ski films and much more from my Clockwords studio in Victor, Idaho.
