For the second year in a row, we worked with Avatech for our International Pro Riders' Workshop, as we think it's a technology that's really going to change how people gather information about backcountry conditions. The company produces a smart snow probe, the SP2, which provides a full readout of the layers of the snowpack–something that normally takes 10 minutes to suss out by digging a snow pit–in seconds. Users can gather a lot more data with this tool and in many more specific spots than ever before possible with manual observations.
Avatech also more recently launched Avanet, a cloud platform that collects crowd-sourced conditions and weather information–a recent run-in with cracking snow can be documented and uploaded to the cloud in a few moments for all to see–and also includes detailed terrain visualization and route planning programs.
We're stoked on what these guys have to offer and hope you download Avanet today and start providing your own backcountry observations so your mountain community can benefit from your time spent in the backcountry.
