Largest Glacier Cave System in the Lower 48 States, on Mt Hood, Revealed in New Viral Video

A stunning video shot over the past year by Uncage the Soul Productions reveals the remarkable and changing landscape in the Sandy Glacier Cave system on Mt Hood.

PORTLAND, Or. - Nov 18, 2014 - Portland based production company, Uncage the Soul, released a new video online called ‘Requiem of Ice’, featuring the largest glacier cave system in the lower 48 states. Located on the west face of Mt Hood, The Sandy Glacier Cave system is made up of two large caves, Snow Dragon and Pure Imagination; both extending deep into the glacier. This ‘Requiem of Ice’ project, a year in the making, reveals the dramatic melting and collapsing of the cave system that has been occurring since its discovery around a decade ago.

To create the video, John Waller and Ben Canales of Uncage the Soul Productions made multiple trips to the cave to observe and film changes that occurred over the past year. “It isa breathtaking place, but also quite dangerous”, said Waller. “Each time we visited we were amazed at how much deterioration and collapse of the cave structure had happened. Because it is such a dynamic place, we had to be constantly vigilant about ourown safety.”

The cave systems have been mapped and surveyed since 2011 by Brent McGregor and Eddy Cartaya of the Oregon High Desert Grotto and in that time they have discovered more than a mile of caves and passages beneath the Sandy Glacier. McGregor and Cartaya’s exploration of the cave system was featured in a 2013 multimedia presentation produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting. http://www.opb.org/glaciercaves/

Waller and Canales were inspired by McGregor and Cartaya’s exploration to produce a short film that takes viewers on a visual odyssey of the cave system before it disappears. Their narrative interpretation of the final thoughts of the glacier cave is accompanied with the time-lapse, high speed, and aerial footage shot since October, 2013. “We wanted to give a voice to the cave as a character”, noted Canales. “Our goal was to show the massive scale of these caves, as well as the intimate details to really give the viewer the experience of being there.”
