Scientist and photographer James Balog started Extreme Ice Survey in 2007 with the goal of documenting the Northern Hemisphere's retreating glaciers. His work was featured in the Emmy-winning documentary, Chasing Ice.

Now Balog and his crew are going to spend the next five years photographing extreme ice changes in the Southern Hemisphere. They start in South Georgia Island, a British territory east of the tip of South America and northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula.
