Summer Activities

Once the snow melts and the days become longer, Jackson quickly becomes the region's center for outdoor activity and exploration. Interestingly enough, Jackson welcomes a great deal more visitors in the summer months than in the winter. Although a majority of these tourists flow through town in giant Winebeggos, with bikes, canoes, tents, and anything else possible strapped to the back of their rig, summers are an incredible time to explore this hard to reach part of the country. Despite the millions of visitors and tourists that make their way to Jackson every summer, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to escape the crowds.

The variety and amount of hobbies that last years ski partners acquire in the summer can be astonishing. Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are a huge pull for summer travelers and it is easy to see why. The towering peaks of the Grand Teton Cathedral Group that seem to jut up from Jackson Hole unannounced offer hikers, backpackers, and climbers easy access to an infinity of trails and opportunity for days of adventure. It's hard to miss out on Yellowstone National Park, known for its thermal activity, river canyons, and abundance of wildlife.

Fly fisher's drool over the mellow sections of the Snake River that run through Grand Teton National Park and Jackson. As the river enters the southern end of the Jackson Hole valley, it is forced with the Hoback River into a narrow canyon, creating exciting white water for rafters and kayakers. Local trails, accessible from downtown Jackson, offer a variety of challenges for mountain bikers and a handful of the valley's ranches offer scenic horseback riding tours and pack trips. Watch out for hot air balloons in the early morning sky and local paragliding enthusiasts hovering above Snow King and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. You can take your pick from a variety of local golf courses and don't even think about missing a Jackson classic, the weekly Wednesday evening Rodeo. Town square is full of boutiques, art galleries, great restaurants, and is always worth a visit as well. And if you're still looking for something to do, just ask a local. We don't bite! Whatever it is that brought you to Jackson, chances are you will experience so much more than planned.

Winter Activities

Just a guess, but you're most likely not searching the TGR site for another opinion on how extreme, deep, or sick the skiing and boarding is in Jackson Hole. Our films easily justify why anyone would want ski in Jackson. But don't be surprised that there is a population of visitors, although small, who visit Jackson in the winter months without ever strapping skis or a board on to their feet.

The valley offers many enjoyable ways to fill the winter days. Rent a snowmobile for a day of ripping around as fast as you can on Togwatee Pass or in the Gros Ventre Mountains. Or experience the non-motorized version by hopping on a sled dog tour and cruise along the base of the Tetons or be led to a distant natural hot spring. Take a snowshoe or cross country ski tour in Grand Teton National Park, a great option for a mellow and scenic day. Grab an inner tube and race down Jackson's local tubing hill, King Tubes; it's a thrill you can enjoy at any age, no matter how cool you are. The National Elk Refuge offers winter sleigh rides and you can always count on a rowdy group at a weekly ice hockey game, featuring the Jackson Moose.

But if you are still itching for those downhill turns, Jackson visitors can easily access three resorts, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village, Snow King in downtown Jackson, and Grand Targhee in Teton Valley, Idaho.
