Tahoe Residents Told To Stay Indoors, Sierra Resorts Close

Kirkwood photo.

Storm conditions in Tahoe have become so extreme that residents have been advised to stay indoors until further notice, as the region continues to be hammered by extreme weather. In the past week, there's been almost 150 inches of snowfall in parts of Tahoe, and another 4 to 8 inches of snow is expected to fall through early Thursday morning.

The Sierra Avalanche Center issued a high avalanche warning for residents in Crystal Bay and Incline Village as avalanches in similar storm conditions have broken trees and moved cars in the past. Luckily, no homes in the area have ever been damaged by avalanche conditions, but residents are still cautioned to stay away from uphill windows and doors.

Needless to say, roads in the entire region are difficult to travel, with heavy snow accumulation and volatile blizzard conditions contributing to near zero visibility.

Unfortunately, all resorts except Heavenly are closed due to these extreme conditions until mountain operations deem conditions suitable for riding. The full list of closures includes Kirkwood, Northstar, Sierra at Tahoe, Diamond Peak, Sugar Bowl, Mount Rose, Tahoe Donner, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, Homewood Mountain, Boreal Mountain, Soda Springs and Donner Ski Ranch.

The winter storm warning is only in effect until Thursday morning, so when conditions finally let up there should be tons of fresh pow to enjoy! Stay safe out there.
