Holding On To Hope: Dirtbiker Missing In El Dorado Feared Dead

UPDATED 8/5 9:55 a.m. We are saddened to report that as of Tuesday, Ed Cavanaugh has likely been found dead. Cavanaugh went missing on July 17 while riding his motorcycle in El Dorado National Forest near Placerville, California.

According to Newsday, a body was found near Cavanaugh's motorcycle, but has not been positively identified. Cause of death has not been announced and the coroner's office will continue an investigation. The body was found off of the established trail system in brush-filled and rugged terrain.

Here at TGR we extend our deepest condolences to the friends, family, and all who knew Ed.

On July 17, Ed Cavanaugh was riding his dirt bike in the El Dorado National Forest near Placerville, California. Now missing for 12 days, family and friends of Cavanaugh have joined up with search and rescue teams to find him.

Cavanaugh is an Expert Wilderness Teacher and avid-outdoorsman with plenty of backcounty experience, but family and friends worry since he is a diabetic and may not have enough insulin with him.

The search for Cavanaugh is already massive; on Saturday there were 60 family members and friends who joined the search teams, but they hope more people can help with the effort. A  Fundly page has also been started and raised $41,267 to help pay for fuel and supplies for the search crew.

The El Dorado National Forest is home to a vast expanse of recreational trails, weaving through terrain filled with dense foliage, ravines, cliffs, and animals, making the search difficult.
