Armada Magic J Review

As a primary backcountry set up, many of my friends ski the 185 cm Armada JJ mounted with Dynafit bindings. It’s a good, light setup for touring because of the JJ’s progressive shape, and tech bindings are a no-brainer for touring. Seeing all these pairs of JJs in the back of my pickup piqued my interest, but I didn’t want to have the same ski as all my friends. I wanted something bigger and better—the 190 cm Armada Magic J.

Swix Sonic R1 115-140 CM 13/14 Adjustable Touring Poles Review

The first thing I noticed when I picked up Swix's Sonic R1 adjustable touring poles was their weight, or total lack of it. Thanks to a carbon fiber shaft construction adopted from Swix's cross-country technology, these poles tip the scales at a svelte 212 grams per pole.

Extremely Canadian Backcountry Skiing Clinic Review

Extremely Canadian is a Whistler-based company that is best known for offering specialty steep skiing clinics (combining a mix of quasi-guiding and instruction inbounds). With the growth in interest in backcountry skiing worldwide and in the Whistler environs, it seemed logical to Peter and Jill (founders and owners) to expand their offerings to extend to the backcountry. A new product they offer this year is a One-day Backcountry Clinic (see press-release for full marketing gobbledygook) for $ 199 per person.

Best Outerwear of 2012

When it comes to outerwear, looking good is only the beginning. The true value of jackets and pants lie within their ability to not only keep us warm and dry, but to actually progress our riding and enhance our experiences. 2012 was particularly generous in offering us a sweet stash of outerwear options that refuse to fail when fueling our passions. Now that we have stomped our landing in 2013, it is worth taking a look back at some of the jackets and pants that helped get us here, and promise to continue pushing us further.

Fashion On The Slopes

Women would be lying if they said they purchased outerwear strictly based on technical allure. Sure, waterproofing and warmth can and should come into play, but if something is cute and stylish, she is more likely to buy it. This season, there are more options than ever that are both functional and on trend from slopes to street. Longer jackets and slimmer fits are all the rage, while colorful camo and animal prints can be seen everywhere. Peep these selections and choose what your 2013 style is going to be for yourself.

Atomic Tracker 130 Review

The line between AT boot and full alpine boot continues to blur with the Atomic Tracker 130.
ne of the most impressive aspects of Snow-Chute Boot is the amount of performance jammed into such a lightweight package.
Ride Maestro Snowboard Binding Review

After taking these bad boys out for about 10 days, you can really tell that they tried to minimize the construction of the binding. There are a few key features of this binding that stand out among similar products. The Slimeback highback is made from a more malleable plastic that really allows you really roll smoothly with those deep turns and give you that extra stretch while you tweak grab. In addition to that, when I find my legs getting tired and I’m weaving through trees and I want to stand up like Lego Man, it doesn’t have that rigid feel in your lower calf that forces you to stand up straight. These allow you to stay relaxed and reduce fatigue.

Sound confusing here? Sorry. Is it easy in real life? Yes. You could say it’s a cinch. Thanks, I’ll be here all night. …

Scott Scream Helmet Review

Helmet selection should only come down to protection, but like all things it’s not that simple. Scott’s Scream helmet is made with an ABS hard shell and meets the current CE EN 1077 certification. Yeah I have no clue what that means, but apparently it represents some of the toughest testing conditions for ski helmets at this time. Shock absorption, penetration by a pointed object and field of view are all tested. That’s pretty rad and now that we know it’s safe we can move on to style and comfort.

Traveling nowadays can be a real hassle to say the least. You can’t seem to go anywhere without dropping additional cash on extra fees or finding new difficulties when you arrive at the airport. With all of the new travel rules being imposed by almost every major airline, having the appropriate luggage becomes even more paramount to saving money and enjoying your time away. When not checking a bag, the Dakine Over Under is my new bag of choice for milking every square inch of any overhead compartment I encounter.

I have sifted through piles of gear so far for this season and these are easily some of the best.

It’s very easy to get tired of layering all the time. I’ll be the first to admit that I do. Sometimes you just want to grab a super warm jacket when the weather turns frigid and you just want to be done with it already.
Outdoor Research Point And Chute Glove Review

I’m stoked on the Point and Chute glove and not just because it’s a clever name. The design resembles that of a traditional 3-finger lobster design, but instead splitting the fingers 2-and-2, the Point and Chute puts 3 fingers in one, leaving the thumb and trigger finger to operate independently. This gives you greater dexterity when taking photos, sifting through pockets, operating a sled, shooting guns, or whatever.

The Spy Platoons are back again for a second season and can easily hold their own in the oversized goggle category. These bad boys are definitely large and in charge. My favorite Platoon model this season is the TSL (The Seventh Letter Crew, an L.A. based artist collective) + Pose (artist) frames that feature sick graphics all over the frames and strap and Pose’s graffiti signature on the lens. These are not janky elementary school graphics that most goggle manufacturers push off on consumers as “cool.” I give big props to Spy for supporting real artists and incorporating actual art into their products. It’s a breath of fresh air.

The Arc’teryx Men’s Keibo jacket is my favorite ski/snowboarding jacket this season. I honestly can’t find a better jacket than this and I am so stoked that I have the opportunity to rock this all winter long. I was super happy with my Arc’teryx Micon jacket (the Keibo’s more insulated big brother) from last season and used that as a benchmark for this year, but the Micon had a few drawbacks that the Keibo addresses and improves upon (for me). The Keibo is less insulated than the Micon for warmer days and the arm length is longer which is perfect for my ape length arms. I do still however recommend the Micon jacket for people who don’t want to layer much or just like added insulation. Your call.

I’m not going to lie: I’ve been sporting the same blue, 48-inch rental ski poles that I borrowed and never returned from Wildernest Sports, at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, since the winter of 2006-’07. I’m not the only one – these rental poles are in the hands of almost every skid in the JHMR tram line. But this year, I’m shedding my past, returning my rentals, and dropping in with these Soul Poles – perhaps the most environmentally friendly piece of ski equipment out there.
TREW TREWth Bib Pant Review

As a loyal snow pant wearer for some 12 odd years, I was a little skeptical crossing over to what I interpreted as the ‘dark side’ of snow trousers. I associate bibs with uncomfortable straps over my shoulders, overheating due to too much layering, and most importantly, trouble relieving myself in the restroom after a few aprés beverages. However, after years of strapless shredding, the TREWth Bibs have made me reconsider. This pair of bibs has gone ahead and made me forget everything I thought about bibs.

Atomic Benchetler Ski Review

I ski the 183 Atomic Bent Chetler 90 percent of the time. They excel in pow, but can essentially be a one quiver ski. They are 142 mm in the tip, 123 mm under foot, and 134 mm in the tail, with a 19 meter turn radius. And the camber under foot makes them super stable on hard pack. The flex and design is great for a super playful feel in the pow. It’s the best ski I’ve skied for buttering, slashes, and more or less surfing the snow.

K2 Pon2oon Ski Review

The K2 Pon2oons are the second generation of the Shane McConkey inspired ski that changed how we think about powder skiing. A handful of modifications were made to the original to make it more aggressive — particularly at high speeds — while still maintaining its surfy feel. These changes include: a stiffer tail, less rocker (it still has plenty) and less pintail. The 179s (they're also available in 169 and 189) spec at out-of-this-world 157-132-122 mm dimensions and feature obligatory tip and tail rocker for maximum flotation

Weighing in at 23-ounces and sporting 20,000-mm waterproofing, this hard shell spits in the face of oncoming storms. It's tough enough to survive brushes with branches and being dragged along rocks.
Full Tilt Seth Morrison Pro Model Ski Boots Review

Seth Morrison says he’s been skiing the same boots for the past 22 years, and I now understand why. The Full Tilt pro model that bears his name features FT's 3-piece construction, which provides a more natural flex and is comparably lighter weight (they weigh 1,999 grams/boot) than the more traditional (1-piece) overlap boots you're probably used to. The boots feature a unique cable buckle system that more evenly distributes your weight. Additionally, the buckles themselves are mounted on a track that has as many as 14 increments, allowing for very precise adjustment. The Seth Morrisons come with moldable Intuition liners that are industry leading in comfort and warmth. This combination of construction, buckles and liners yields a level of control and responsiveness that I haven't experienced from any other boot.

Burton Wheelie Flight Deck Bag Review

I have a tendency to collect bags. Carry-on luggage, in particular. The problem is that no one bag seems to do it all. I kinda feel like Goldilocks – the bag’s too big or too small, never just right.

Lately, though, I’ve been gravitating toward the same bag because it does everything I need it to, and that’s the Burton Wheelie Flight Deck.

Swany Eco-Pipe Gloves Review

As a kid, my first pair of non hand-me-down gloves was a pair of Swanys. They were warm, comfortable and lasted through years of teenage angst and abuse. As such, I was psyched to get another pair on my hands this year. Swany's Eco-Pipe Gloves provide the warmth and comfort I've come to expect from the brand while taking gloves into a totally new dimension with their unique, environmentally friendly design.

Spy Rivet Sunglasses Review

Why is there such a negative stigma around more stylish eyewear brands making high-performance sport sunglasses? Many of the eyewear brands that are considered the “coolest” make super high-tech goggles and fashion-forward sunglasses, but if you want some mountain biking performance sunglasses, then you’re out of luck. I personally think this is stupid and am happy to report that Spy is now into performance sunglass game these days and their glasses are legit.

It’s not often that you come across a product that’s design has solved every issue that you can think of before you can address it. The POC Spine VPD Hydration Pack is the Swiss army knife of small-size hydration packs. The Spine VPD has a bunch of conveniently organized pockets for stashing clothes, phones, ipods, snacks, etc. The VPD is an effective feature that provides spinal support and protection in the event of a seriously fall. I would confidently recommend this to any mountain biker, road biker, hiker, skier, or snowboarder.

POC Joint VPD 2.0 Elbow Pad Review

Elbow pads don't need multiple uncomfortable straps or a hard shell. The Joint VDP 2.0 Elbow from POC is proof of that. The design is simple, clean, and functional. POC uses a fully sleeved pad with one strap to tighten it down. The padding technology allows for maximum flexibility that conforms to your arm. On impact, the pad has the ability to absorb the shock and become rigid.

POC Joint VPD 2.0 Knee Pad Review

At first glance, the POC Joint VPD long knee doesn’t seem like your typical DH pad. It doesn’t have a hard shell, complicated Velcro, snap closure, or any of that. POC utilizes a two velcro closure system and a full sleeve to keep the pad tight on your knee and shin. The pad doesn’t seem like it can take a pedal blow to the shin very well, however the shock absorption properties on the pad are top notch.

It's Friday afternoon and I've got what feels like an endless weekend ahead of me. I put on my Smith Serpico sunglasses, peel out of work and head into Jackson's great outdoors in hopes to not look at the Internet for at least 48 hours. The Serpico is Smith's take on the classic aviator shape. The frames are both light and comfortable, but more importantly, are well constructed and built to last. Don't even get me started on how many $10 pairs of aviators I've been through over the past couple years. They're available in both standard and slim sizes (for smaller faces) and can be found in up to 10 different styles that feature both polarized and non-polarized lenses. Try on a pair today, you won't be disappointed.

While driving west for eight hours across the entirety of Wyoming, my matte black Smith Gibson polarized sunglasses were my best friends.
Imagine a house constructed of steel and stone, but with a padded interior made of memory-foam. That's what you get with the Burton SLX: superior comfort surrounded by a stable and supportive S4 outer shell — built from the same material found in bullet-proof vests.
I feel like I've been stuck in a cycle of buying cheap, disposable gloves the past couple of seasons. I try to ski 100 days every year and the cumulative wear from that builds pretty quickly, especially on a pair of gloves.
DPS Wailer 112RP Hybrid Ski Review

With all the acclaim that surrounds DPS and its signature Wailer 112RP, I knew a pair belonged in my quiver. My order arrived in early December and they quickly became my go-to resort and sidecountry powder ski for all but the deepest days (DPS has a different ski just for that — the Lotus 138). Through a combination of aggressive sidecut (141-112-128), tapered tips and tails, as well as rocker (450 mm at the tip and 400 mm at the tail) they take skiing powder to a whole new dimension. The sidecut allows for easy and quick turn initiation, while the rocker provides smooth floatation to ski untracked snow effortlessly.

DPS Nori Poles 2012 Review

If you've heard of DPS, you probably know them for their highly acclaimed progressively-shaped carbon fiber skis. Building on that success, the ski company has ventured into the realm of ski poles with a bold offering. Their adjustable Nori Poles weigh a mere 255 grams each. By comparison, a Black Diamond's Traverse Pole weighs 295 grams and the difference is immediately noticeable. Their upper and lower shafts are made of Tital and carbon fiber, respectively, which creates a remarkable combination of stiffness and strength without compromise to weight.

A ski jacket doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, it should be the simplest thing. All a ski jacket needs to do is keep you warm and dry and fit well. While the Arc’teryx Sidewinder SV Jacket is not insulated, it will keep you warm by keeping you dry and protected from the wind. It also fits well and has a hood suitable for a Jedi Knight, which, you know, will fit around your helmet nicely. If you’re shopping for a coat that will let you be comfortable while being active in the mountains, this waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX® jacket is one worth taking a closer look at.

Utilizing protection in many aspects of life is essential. You don’t want to drive around in a Chevy Corvair, skydive without a backup shoot or extend a super sketchy date into the next morning. That’s just plain stupid. Skiing without a helmet is also not too smart either. I have had multiple friends whose lives have been saved through helmet usage and always wear one when I go shred.
Arc'teryx Quintic 28 Backpack Fall 2012 Preview

I went through the process of buying a sidecountry backpack this past fall and walked away from it fairly disappointed. The pack I ended up buying works fine, looks okay and fits well enough, but it's nothing out of the ordinary. As such, it wasn't much of a surprise to me that packs started catching my eyes while wandering the floors of SIA this past January. The one that stood out to me the most was Arc'teryx's Quintic 28 backpack because it not only looked good, but was thoughtfully designed in a functional way that few other of today's packs seem to be.

The Slasher skis (131mm x 112mm x 128mm) are great in pow, on groomers, in the air and anywhere else you’ll want to go during a day on the hill. The Slasher is quite possibly the best one ski quiver on the market. I have taken this ski everywhere on the mountain and it excels everywhere you’ll want to go.

I have to give big props to Arc’teryx for creating some of my favorite pieces of the 11-12 season. The Atom SV Hoody is one of those pieces.

What makes the Atom SV Hoody great is that it’s a super warm and compressible synthetic Coreloft insulated mid-layer with insulated hoody for skiing and boarding, but it’s also an amazing every day walking-around jacket thanks to the fact that it’s wind resistant and the 100% nylon ripstop fabric features a water repellant coating. When the mercury drops, I wear this jacket to the store, the bar, walking the dog, etc. I love this versatility because most mid-layers just stay in my bag when I’m not skiing.

Men's First Ascent Midweight 1/4 Zip Baselayer Review

So this past week I was able to get up into the Tetons a couple times and test out this new baselayer by Eddie Bauer. On our first attempt at the Middle Teton, it was pretty warm on the approach and I found myself sweating quite a bit. Worried I might have to change out because of the warmer temps, this product did it’s job well, and every time I took a break it would dry out very quickly and keep me warm in the brisk wind.

Bataleon Undisputed Snowboard 2011 Review

Bataleon Undisputed Snowboard 2011 Review provided by evo - I needed a Pow Stick that could support my weight, I'm 6'1 220 lbs so my 159cm LibTech TRS wasn't cutting it in the deep powder. I wanted something that floated but didn't want a board that was to long since I like doing trees. This board was a good balance, it floats so easily, and is long/wide enough to support my body weight when not hauling down the steeps.

Summer Skiing In Bariloche, Argentina With SASS Global Travel

San Carlos de Bariloche sits at the southern end of a massive lakes region that expands into Chile, and offers the skier or rider looking for a summertime shredding experience a markedly different experience that most ski destinations in South America. Cerro Catedral, the resort, sits twenty minutes outside of downtown Bariloche and is South America’s biggest, counting 1,500 acres of inbounds terrain and another 1,500 of sidecountry – about the size of Mammoth, and with a big variety in terrain from mellower in-bounds terrain to steeper sidecountry lines, endless backcountry possibilities and some of the only tree skiing in the southern hemi, with perfectly-spaced, moss-draped trees covering the bottom third of the mountain.

The pack seems to have a fairly decent amount of internal storage space for all those extras you'd like to have on the mountain for the day. Very thick and comfortable gel padding on the back of the pack will keep those hard items inside from poking you.

2011 K2 HellBent Ski Review

The 2011 Hellbent is a leap forward from the 2010 Hellbent. There are many differences besides the obvious 1cm added through out. Slight early taper has been added making for a less hooky and smoother ride. However, one of the most important changed is that the 2011 Hellbent is true to length. The benefit of the 2011 Hellbent being true to length is that it decreases swing weight which on top of the fact that k2 shaved weight off the tips allows for faster spinning for jibbing and faster pivoting for tight trees.

Never Summer Heritage Rocker Snowboard 2011 Review

When every Never Summer Heritage is built, Hermione Granger apparates into the factory to weave highly advanced spells for lightness, grip and power into each layer of the board. This makes it the most magical board available to us muggles, guaranteeing an advantage on the hill to the lucky owner, which s/he will feel in every turn.

The first time you step onto your Heritage, the bond is made (just like in Avatar when Jake captured his flying mount!) and the board is linked to your motor cortex, enabling it to seamlessly track lines, as you visualize them, with minimal musculoskeletal effort.

Ninthward Rory Silva Twin Tip Powder Skis Review

Enter Ninthward’s Rory Silva twin tips, made to rip pretty much anything. The full sidewall construction and traditional camber allow the skis to go pretty much as fast as you want on groomers, as well as embue the skis with strength to power through crud and choppy chop that you’ll inevitably face. The steel edges built into these, as well as most Ninthward skis, were made to be abused, so when the powder isn’t flowing, feel free to destroy your skis on manmade obstacles. Hit enough rails and you can take any ski down, but the Rory’s are tough, tougher than most to be certain.

K2 Pontoon Skis 2011 Review

I've said it before and was reminded this spring once again why the Pontoons are so darn good. First, this isn't a "pro" skiers's ski or simply a "powder only" ski. The Pontoons are remarkably versatile. While best in any smooth conditions (1" to 5' of new snow), getting to the lift after the off piste run isn't a nightmare as some would expect. There's sidecut under the foot that allows you to actually carve a decent turn and the soft/smooth snow performance more than justifies the times you wished that you had some super-carvers on the groomers.

Rome Graft Rocker Snowboard 2011 Review

I recently picked up a Graft Rocker from Rome Snowboards, and I must say it was a great choice. I've been riding this snowboard the past few storms at Jackson Hole and it's been perfect. Centered stance, rocker in the middle, and aggressive camber underfoot. I've heard all the hype, as we all have, about rockered/cambered snowboards and all of it seems true. Slashing on this snowboard is easy, breezy, beautiful only because that targeted camber engages some mystical, hidden power I've never felt on a snowboard.

Smith I/O Interchangeable Optics Spherical Series Goggles 2011 Review

The I/O is my favorite goggle of all time. The ability to quickly and easily change out the lens makes my life easy after I take a huge tomahawk. This way I never have to waste room in my pack with an extra set of goggles, just an extra lens is all I ever need. There even better on the on the resort when I don't have a pack cause I just throw a lens in my pocket and I can change it out on the chair.

Men's K2 Kung Fujas 2011 Review

K2 Kung Fujas Skis 2011: Pep Fujas demanded a ski that he could charge every type of terrain on, so K2 worked with him to develop a new wider K2 Kungng Fujas Ski, a ski that is big enough to float and take on the backcountry, yet nibble and poppy enough to shred the resort and the park. He added even more All-Terrain Rocker to enhance its performance in the soft snow, and retained the Bi-Directional taper for optimal switch carving. The result is a ski that is truly a quiver of one.
