Having the right luggage for your ski travels can help turn a good trip into a great one. There’s nothing more frustrating than having luggage that isn’t right for your gear or is hard to haul around when you also have a ski bag in tow.
I absolutely hate wasting time with crappy luggage and own probably 10 different pieces so that I always have the right bag for each of my particular travels. Taking into account duration, amount of gear needed, durability and other factors always help me choose the right bag. Even with all of these variables I always like my gear to be designed well, light weight, easy to maneuver and bomb proof. The Thule 87L Rolling Duffel meets all of these requirements.
I know it’s kind of funny to say, but my favorite feature on this rolling duffel is its oversized wheels with integrated side stays. After cycling through so many pieces of luggage over the years I don’t remember any other brand that has better wheels than these Thules. They are amazing in airports, jumping off curbs and turning on a dime. The bag doesn’t wobble around like many others and they’re just plain awesome.
This bag is basically the perfect marriage between a duffel bag and rolling luggage suitcase. It offers easy top zippered access into the main compartment and the compression of a duffel bag with the wheels, side zipper, telescoping handle and tough exoskeleton of a rolling suitcase. There is a split main compartment for better organization (easily separates your helmet, outerwear, boots, gloves and more), a heat-molded crush-proof compartment great for goggles and the water resistant fabric and lightweight aluminum hardware allow it to take any airline beating.
The only drawbacks that I found with this bag are that the main compartment does not split evenly in half (it’s currently about 70 percent on top and 30 percent on bottom) and the telescoping handles buttons for retraction are located very far apart which makes them slightly cumbersome for smaller hands.
The Thule 87L Rolling Duffel is a great piece of luggage for ski travel and will definitely make your life easier on your future ski trips. I recommend giving it a spin and seeing if you like it as much as I do.
