TR: Wine Bottle Coolers, Treasury Mountain. 10/20/07
mtnbikerskierchick, goldenboy, non-mags Jack, Luke, and Sutton.
Heading out Yule pass:
MBSC, with Whetstone in the background:
The plan was to summit Treasury mountain and drop off the other side into the winebottle couloirs, which I knew would have plenty of snow, being sheltered and north facing. Here's the route up Treasury:
Skinning the ridge of Treasury:
So far it was a beautiful day, and the views were fantastic ahead of the approaching storm. Mt Owen:
Chair Mountain:
The winds picked up as we approached the summit:
Capital and Snowmass. I like the way Capital is dark and foreboding, and Snowmass is still in the light.
Jack walked out to check out our lines, with the summit of Treasury behind. We all thought that the diagonal line looked like a fun mission for another day.
The couloirs were filled in nicely, and we were all excited to find some good skiing in October. The nice sunny day we had started with had been replaced by clouds so the photos aren't that great. Sutton dropped into the skier's right couloir, while the rest of us went left. Luke:
MBSC:
Jack:
gb:
Looking back at Treasury from the North Pole basin. The couloirs are hidden, but identifiable from the pinnacle seen in the shots of MBSC, seen above.
Not your typical view of the Maroon Bells and Pyramid:
MBSC, tearing up the road that would lead us out of the basin to the snowmobile we had parked in Schofield park:
We ran shuttle back up to Paradise divide and made it out before the storm started up. The snow conditions left a little to be desired- dense, wind affected and slightly crusty. It would have been difficult skiing even in mid-season form, but for some of the first turns of the year, it was pretty challenging. But oh so fun, for sure.

Nice work, I've been wondering what the coverage was like back in there.

For the foreigners: is that in Colorado? Half these trip reports I don't know if they are in Canada or California.

A good rule of thumb is that if it doesn't contain a specific location it's from Colorado. This is because everyone from Colorado assumes that everyone in the world knows everything about the greatest state in the world.

FKNA! Great work mags! Wish my october riding had been that good, instead we hit probly a thousand rocks. I think I'm going to wait for more snow on the front range. any thoughts as to any coolies that might be on in the FR? I'm waiting for good conditions on cliffs and coolies.

Cool. CO getting the goods and nice to see GB and MSBC starting the season strong. Needs more terrifying gnar, though - like getting stuck on an ice bulge without crampons or something.

It was a fun day out, but also really challenging! It's the first time I've started my season with a 3+ hour skin up to 13,000 ft to ski a pretty steep couloir with chunked up snow where every turn needed to be a jump turn. Needless to say, I felt incredibly out of shape I don't care how much mtn biking you do in the summer. There's no better training for skinning and skiing than skinning and skiing itself!
