    18.5 pound single speed, 29er.

    start with on of this


    add a pair of these

    this this on top of them


    and a bit of this

    ontop of this


    OK out of pics

    XTR 180mm cranks/BB

    eggbeater pedals (cheap, not the octuplet Ti ones)

    syntance post, Ti railed seat.

    Ti stem, Pizza carbon bars, hope brakes


    Ya I know I could get it lighter, but the $$$ vs gr becomes silly at that point.


    nice ride, climbs fast, abusive on the way down, but what did I think it would be like for a rigid singlespeed?

    18.5 pounds on the scale, not a marketing weight, without pedals, in XS, with helium filled tires, and no grips.

    20rear, 36 front.
    33 in the front early season,
    I have an 18 for the rear too,

    kind hilly and rocky where I live in banff, and I'm using it a mnt bike, not a city cruiser.

    frame $500, new
    wheels + headset $500, new
    brakes/rotors $150 from uncle crud
    $100 cranks and ring from a maggot too.
    bar/stem/seat/pedals I had around in my parts bins
    $100 post
    $250 fork.
    $1600 total I guess.

    now most of that was hunting for prodeals too. If you got it shop built, at retail, $2500+ I think.

    interesting choice on the Ti stem. the ones i have experience with were more flexy than an equivalent-weight alu stem (mmmm. thomson) but i could see how on a rigid fork setup you might want more stem flex to take the edge off things a bit....?

    definitely post pics. it's snowing outside but SS stoke is always welcomed.

    the ti stem is what I had "in stock" in the size I needed. works well with the carbon fork/bars.

    My ss is only 7 pounds heavier than yours! You crazy hippies and your rigid bikes.
    My new road bike weighs more just like uc's.
    I have got the singlespeed trails dialed around here so next time through we need to go pedal, even if it means next year. (most likely)

    Can't wait to see pics as the bike season is still in full effect here and stoke is greatly appreciated.

    full build



    some old school XTR cranks/bb in 180mm, and the salsa ring


    AM classic wheels and headset, carbon fork, stans crow tires


    Hope brakes, carbon bar, Ti stem, carbon headset spacers, and big foam grips (suspension?)


    Syntance post, old school lightspeed Ti saddle

    beautiful. Nice work. How do the crows hook up? And were there any tricks to modifying the xtrs to a single? Have a pair sitting around and thinking about using them instead of a set of in-board bearing stylos I have on my other single.

    crows work just fine, Keep in mind that a full rigid you just can't go that fast, so for the speed that the bike can go, they work fine. Would be scarry on my "real" bike (c'ndale prophet) but for that bike they work great

    for the XTR. I just bolted on a single ring. no changes to the cranks

    looks sweet, glad to see those Minis on a bike getting used!

    chaka, like mntlion said, just run your front chainwheel in the same position as you would use a middle ring in the 3-ring setup. you'll need to get shorter chainring bolts/nuts because the 3-ring models are longer because they go through more rings. but aside from the shorter chainring nuts/bolts, there's nothing fancy about it. use those XTRs!

    Some of the old skool xtr that looked like that had an integrated ring and spider. The other rings bolted to this spider or something. If those are the ones you have, they make a 5 bolt spider that fits onto the spline on the crankarm. Spot also used to make a ring that fit directly onto this spline pattern a la the eno cranks.

    Nice bike mnt lion. where are the boone ti cogs? you could save a few more grams if you cut the steerer tube real short to make it uncomforable and cut those brake lines down some.
