Alta Heli Cam Video

Well, I think it's going to work. I hauled the heli (10 pounds) and electronics (8 pounds) up Baldy today. I left behind the radio for the camera mount, and the remote video screen. Wasn't too bad skinning and breaking trail with the extra weight. Once I get some fitness back, it shouldn't be a big deal at all. And the little bugger flys with plenty o' power at this 11,000ft. Ha!

Let me start with the excuses first.
1. No camera operator, guessing what the camera is seeing.
2. Wind, not too bad, but a factor in the down draft coming off the shoulder.
3. Clouds, snow, rime. The main and tail blades had ICE on them. Not good.
4. Glitching from condensation on electronics.
5. No infrared stabilization. Wanted to fly without it, to test everything else.
6. Cold, cold fingers. Hard to fly with cold fingers. But no big deal.
7. Standard def camera, smashed the HDV. New one on the way.
8. Wobble in camera mount. Had to bungie in position, because no camera operator or radio to 'fix' servos in one place. So the bobble in the vid is from the bungie. Won't be there with a camera operator.
9. The skiing is boring and conservative, why? Well, it's October, and the snow isn't THAT deep yet.
10. Today was more beta testing than anything. Can I hike with all this shit, can I ski with it, will it work at 11k. Hell yes.

Is that enough? Ok, here is the vid. 43mb-2 minutes-Windows Media.

of course you know this, but that is as cool as it gets to put that puppy together and bring it for everyone to enjoy. Have fun with your new toy this winter.

Way cool. That's pretty steady footage. I've probably missed some posts from you about this, but what powers that little rig - gas, electric? Is there a link?

vario? bergen? custom? sounds big! I fly in the winter with those goofy looking wool fingerless mitten jobs. You will probably get jonged on the hill for em but they are really nice to warm up when you are off the gimbals. I bet you could even find a pair with some kind of wind shell. I have to give you props, flying any RC heli is really difficult (everyone wondering: think ball bearing on a plate of glass). That video is super smooth, you are indeed a talented pilot (and you have excellent taste in music ). Factor in some mountain breeze and holy hell I can't even imagine it. But enough with the ego BJ And keep those clips coming!

It had a big gasser, but it was too expensive to crash, switched to a lighter, more asthetic electric.

SICKNESS!!!

The tip of the iceberg as they say.

Great job filming too considering you were basically doing it blind. You even framed the skier nice!

I'm a little disappointed with the wobble, but easily remedied.

The pucker for me was kinda high, not having flown at that elevation, poor weather and vis, etc, etc.

I'm over that now, and the next time out will see more aggressive flying.

I hate you guys! But not as much as the baker gang.

You will get some sick footy with that thing once you get it fully figured out. Imagine if you could do a follow cam with it down the chute! The list of applications is neverending!
Thanks for sharing

I guess if you wanted to you could figure out your density altitude limits if the manufacturer has one and then use a OGE hover chart to figure out your capabilities. Might reduce your pucker factor a little. But the winds are another story.

It's not that loud. It sounds loud in the vid because the mic is 4" in front of the motor.

At 100ft, it's barely noticeable.

HA HA ! ! ! That is GREAT!

I love how the lens makes the terrain on the perimeter look like it's sheer vertical--actually almost convex!

Cool!

man, you guys were beating it.
That's beyond sick. Can't wait to see what it brings this season.
Way to get after it.
How were the rocks? We skied in the nest/ N.rus and it was mostly smooth, 2-3 rocks were found.
