RedBull Silverbelt at Sugar Bowl

whoa...this thing sounds pretty cool.....

www.redbullsilverbelt.com

TOP SKIERS WILL COMPETE ON NATURAL TERRAIN SKIER CROSS COURSE AT SUGAR BOWL SKI RESORT IN LAKE TAHOE, CA
Considered one of the world's premier skiing events between 1940 and 1975, the prestigious Silver Belt ski race will be revived this spring. From March 26 – 28th the Red Bull Silver Belt event will return to Sugar Bowl ski resort at Donner Summit in Lake Tahoe, CA. The country's top skiers will plummet down the all natural course in a hair raising gang-start skier cross event. Beginning from the narrow chute atop Mt. Lincoln, athletes will descend through gullies, rock bands and mogul fields. No boot packing. No grooming. Only the course as it stands on the day of the race, just like the old days.

Skiers will be competing in hopes of joining the ranks of past Silver Belt champions like Jimmy Huega, Billy Kidd and Stein Ericksen. Before race day all athletes will be given a historic tour of the course with past Silver Belt participants who will add lore and race insight as they retrace the footsteps of America's first daredevils.

"In its day, the Silver Belt was the essence of raw skiing. The course wasn't groomed and the skiers went full bore. Bringing back the event, will revive a style of skiing that pays homage to that tradition," says Greg Murtha, Sugar Bowl's marketing director.

The skiers will be competing for a $10,000 prize purse and the coveted "Silver Belt" belt buckle.

A number of skier-cross events have taken place since the original reign of the Silver Belt ended, all have been on man-made courses. Silver Belt will return skiers and the skiing community to the historical core of skiing and skier-cross in the country's best naturally occurring courses. The event will offer the best of today's high performance skiing with an appreciation for the sport's golden years.

Thumbs up

This is a "course" in the loosest sense right?

You can choose your descent, somewhere within the set "course"?

This would be a great spectator event.

I was going to most likely do it, but now it looks like it's gonna snow on the days of the race. Would much rather be schralping backcountry lines then going head to head with Eric Archer.

I was up there looking at the course yesterday. There's a section near the top that's going to be very interesting. Narrow, huge moguls and a tight turn after coming off a really fast section.

I know where I'm going to put my lawn chair....

Thats a pic i took of the course. Qualifying day sucked and there was ZERO visabilty up top when it was my time to run DFL. Didnt do too bad in the qualifiers but by my luck i got in a heat with fischer davenport and some other fools. Race day was nice and the temps were way high - atleast 60s. I fucked up my start and didnt make the next heat but it was a fun time atleast. Got to do some helmetcam action for the tv show that looked pretty cool. The comp was well worth the $25 entry fee. 2 lift tickets, 3 meal vouchers, 6 drink tickets, flexfit hat and nice north face fleece and all the red bull you could ever try and drink.
