TR: Sayres 6-28-07....again

Skiers: adimmen and nonmags Brian, Derek, and Luke

I only post another Sayres TR because it was so good. This
would be a mountain to put on your list. North facing, tons of
good lines, and incredible views.

The descent was well worth the effort getting there. We went off
the main face just under the top of the peak. This top section was
a bit wind blown so if you put any aggression into your turns there
was a lot of debris coming with you. Once in the couloir itself, the
snow softened into spring goodness. You could get about 8 inches
into the snow with each turn. Time to let her rip.

Starring you in the face the entire way up. Hard to contain the excitement.

Booting up.

Milking the turns. Brian

The damage.

The approach was straightforward: up the LaPlata trail, a right
into the main basin, and follow it all the way to Sayres. We started
around 7:45 so the snow was still firm and granular in the trees.
There were a couple longer dirt spots that were easier to boot but
you could skin the vast majority of the way. The snow in the basin
was great for skinning. When we got onto the apron, it started to
get really sticky but we continued skinning most of the way up. The
ascent took about 5 hours but you could cut this time down
signficantly with a little focus.

The snow in the basin was completely rotten. It was collapsing
everywhere so it was a bit of an effort to get out. We booted out
once on the LaPlata trail again. An earlier start or faster ascent
would save a lot of effort on the way down.

Nice. Iskibc and I skied Sayres a couple years ago. I love that last view looking back at Sayres before you go into the woods, cause you know it will be a looooong time before you see the peak again. Well, long time for me anyway.

Good Stoke!

Daylight savings...you need to set back your clock 2 months.

Nice work. This pic looks nice.

Despite my sound rationale when we spoke Friday, I think you may have found better snow conditions than what we did on Square Top.

I'm a little lost on this one...can I just not see the entrance to that looker's right chute from the summit, or did only 2 of you ski from the summit? (looks like 2 sets of tracks in that left chute which I can see connecting to the summit, and 2 sets in that right chute...which doesn't look to connect from the summit, at least based on where I can see the tracks coming from.)

Three skied from the summit and entered that rock. It's hard to see the tracks because when I came down so did a ton of slough. Look at the picture where Brian's about to go down. The guy in the background is standing on snow ridge at the entrance to the chute. This should give you a better reference frame.

I posted a TR on this on my web page (stanwagon.com...colorado skiing...nearby counties) several years ago. Whether we were first to ski this side of Sayres I cannot be certain of, but it is possible. In any case, I did give names to the two lines: GRAND CENTRAL COULOIR to the grand central couloir coming down W of the summit. And X-RATED for the steeper line to the E of summit. The latter is a triple pun, based on the giant X that forms up there (allowing two entrances), the fact that in Roman numerals X corresponds to S-10 in Dawson's system and that seems an appropriate rating (though it must be said that the W part of the X -- the upper entrance -- is much harder than the lower. I THINK even the lower is an S-10. And of course the X connotes seriousness and the route offers that -- we had to downclimb some rocks when we did it last year. "iskibc" and partner did the X two years ago, as many readers of this will know.

PS: We had a serious avalanche on our annual British Columbia trip this year, requiring a heli evacuation (knee ligament damage). Full report at stanwagon.com......canada skiing.... icefall lodge

PPS: Sayres is worthy of hiking in summer too. It has a USGS marker on its summit that has a 1000-foot error in the elevation marking!
