TR: Sayres Peak, CO 13,738'

Trip Date: April 19, 2007

After meeting up with some Telluride friends at the trailhead, we started the slogging at 5 AM, trying to stay on the La Plata trail until we found ourselves in La Plata Gulch around sunrise. Once in the gulch, we left the trail and followed the stream straight up to the peak, despite the howling headwind and unseasonably cold temps.

Approaching the peak. We booted up the obvious couloir splitting the summits and skied the shot directly off the lookers left summit.

The Telluride guys kicking in the bootpack....

The frontrangers bringing up the rear...

Brrrrrr..... Pi and Eric on the Southwest summit.

Huron(left) and Ice Mountain.

Looking off the summit into La Plata gulch. Mt Elbert in background.

Grizzly Peak and Snowmass in the background left.

Mike skiing off the summit.

Eric ripping it up.

The other Eric making turns.

The other Eric entering the crux choke.

Eric taking a different path.

Pi skiing out of the choke.

Blasting out of the bottom.

Getting ready to head out.

Gunning out of La Plata Gulch.

Overall, the skiing was pretty good and the ski out was very fast. A fun day all around.

Nice! I remember looking at Sayers from La Plata last spring and admiring the lines off of it. Way to get it done!

Meh, not a 14'er. Try again.

Anyone getting it done like you did is more than welcome here! Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Someone please tell me that that line on the rock face in the peak lookers right goes. That makes me happy in the pants.

That peak to the right of center - the big massive ROCK monolith. There's an obvious cleft/cooler running down the entire face just right of the peak. Does it go? Have people skied it? Imagining the possibility of skiing such a stellar line makes me happy in the pants - or in other words, I'm feeling like this just looking at it and would feel like this if anyone has skied it.

That is what I am talking about.

doesn't work on my comp either. Regrigerator couloir has always looked rad to me. When I climbed Huron, I was drooling the whole time looking at Ice/the apostles. I think iskibc may have a TR of the fridge. I hear it can have some nasty rockfall btw.

awesome second set of pics! thought sayers looked sweet when I was up on plata.

The approach is pretty straightforward: Just follow the La Plata trail until you're staring at the peak. We left the car at 5am, got to the summit at 10:40, and returned to the car at 1pm. The snow was bulletproof from the car to the bottom of the couloir, which made the skinning and skiing out really easy.

Really fun tour. Has the feel of a 14er.

Bump for radness. One of you Coloradans should go ski Ice mountain and do a TR. That would be sick and I would enjoy the pics thank you very much.
