Cool Photo TR: Old Age and Old Lines, Grizzly Peak 3.19.07

Getting old isn't all that bad. The sun still comes up. My dad used to tell me that old people get up early because that's the best part of the day. I guess he's right:

Peak 1 and Tenmile Peak at firstlight:

The mountains still look the same:

When you get "old" that whole physical activity thing gets a little more challenging. Here's marshalolson trying to catch up and leave this old fart in the dust:

I was also told me that when you get "old" you start to see things in black & white:

    The line:

marshal checking out some lines to the west:

    Checking out the prize:

    And dropping:

The snow was perfect. The top half was 10" or so of pow on top of a solid base followed by smooth and creamy corn at the bottom. Great way to start the week and begin a new decade of adventures.

    Jamie:

    Mmmmm, pow:

    marshal:

Nice line guys! Wish I had sent you two a PM last night cause I ended up going to A-basin solo this morning and would have much rather done Griz.

    Happy B-day Dave!

    Happy, happy, D.

    That top section looks... tight.

And as previously stated, Marsha, that hat is just tits. I'm confident you are the only man in CO who could pull it off.

    Nice nice work, fellers.

Sweet. I've been thinking of a couple of Grizzlies lately, including that one. Phenomenal clarity on the photos, and the skiing doesn't suck either.

Old??? Ha! I'll let you know when you're old.

Great way to celebrate your birthday. That top section looked just a wee bit tight. How far did you have to slip it?

I love this shot and a belated Happy Birthday. I hope the pics of the Pyramid massif came through and weren't so bad as to be totally worthless, I still have the sunburn from hiking the bowl that day.

Nice - that is a classic!

I was solo and 1/2 of the way up that thing a couple months ago when conditions deteriorated - so bailed - although it was still a nice ski. py camera phone pic:

Sweet! Great b-day present to yourself! I remember you pointing out that line from Torreys and me drooling over it! Looks like such a fun ski!

The top couple hundred feet or so was about two ski lengths wide, so jump turns were in full effect. It's a lot of fun but does a number on your legs and upper body. I could feel the burn. After two consecutive jump turns I had to pause because I was out of breath and my legs were burning. You can always tell when couloir season is creeping up, because the legs need working and the tight turns aren't quite tight yet.

Lloyd and Joey, thanks for the pics! They were helpful.

awesome, awesome, awesome. I still remember your TR from when you, SheRa, and Marmot (IIRC) hit it. It's been on my to-do list since then.

Perhaps a better discussion for Slide Zone, and I don't expect you to have the answer (and do not take this in anyway to be a questioning of your decision to ski this line...I do not doubt your assessment to be accurate...which is what prompts the question [/overclarifying disclaimer] ) And of course, others are welcome to chime in with knowledge here...

So...generally, N-E aspects have had major instability issues over the past week in the CAIC Summit/Vail zone. I know Grizzly is at the easternmost edge of that zone, so perhaps the snowpack in that area is generally not similar to what was happening in Summit/Vail zone. If that's the case, there may not even be a discussion point here. But, assuming the pack in the Grizzly area is generally similar to that of the Summit/Vail zone. Can/does the pack consistently vary (considerably, even) depending on whether you're looking at an open slope, or a couloir (assuming similar elevation/aspect). In other words, you found excellent snowpack conditions in the chute. Most of the stability issues I was reading/hearing about on N aspects at/above TL were on more open slopes. Wasn't hearing of the same issues in chutes/couloirs. Does a couloir tend to hold a more stable snowpack? (again, in direct comparison to an open slope, assuming same elevation/aspect). Hopefully I'm making some sense. I don't think I could ask the question with any more words.
