    Pilonidal Cyst: ever had one?

    aka "truckers but"

I spend alot of time driving....and pretty sure I have a tailbone cyst.

Its pretty common, so im sure someone here has had one.

Wondering if anyone has had any luck with alternatives to surgery?

    thanks

i got one when i was in college rowing. not sure if rowing had anything to do with it though. I just saw a doc who lanced it, drained it, and packed gauze into it for a few days to promote healing from the inside out. He said there was a chance it would come back, since the actual cyst hadnt been removed, but it hasnt yet (18 yrs).

Yeah, had one excised. It sucked, but was better than having it. They can manifest in several ways (some of them very painful and exceptionally disgusting).

They now normally try antibiotics and sitzbaths before cutting as a last resort.

The success rate of the procedure has increased significantly since my father had his done three times several decades ago, but success is still not guaranteed and once you've been cut on, if it reoccures your pretty much guaranteed to get cut on again.

I've had one as well--thought I was growing a tail. One of the shittiest things I have ever been through; had to go to the Dr. for four or five straight days for slitin', drainin' and packin'--driving there/getting in and out of the car was damn near debilitating. You can go to a normal Dr.--simple procedure. The most difficult part is not clenching up your ass checks as the Dr. is at work. This was about 8 years ago. No recurrance for me (knocking on major wood).

I just had mine excised this spring. If you are having a lot of trouble with it flairing up a lot, it is worth it to have it romoved. I just went to a general surgeon and he did a great job. Try to find one who practices the flap technique, and not the open wound healing. Recovery time is much faster with the flap, and a lot less of a hassle. Life is not that great after the surgery, but you can be back to driving in a week or so.

If you have any other questions, shoot me a pm and I would be glad to give you more advice.

I've had the same problem for a while. I haven't been too keen on seeing a doc for the same reason. I can't afford to spend several weeks recovering, especially during ski season. Fortunatlly I haven't had any flareups I can't deal with. From what I've read none of the current procedures a gauranteed effective and all require a significant recovery. I'm holding out for a better option. http://www.pilonidal.org

I have heard some good things about lasers......whats is odd about mine is that it appears to be deep under the skin. I went to a doctor a month or so ago and she said it was not ready to get operated on. Its never bloody or anything like alot of peoples are, its just a very painful bump on my tailbone...

hopefully I can hold out until the summer....

    Hopefully

Had one, mostly from sitting on boats alot. Anyway, i took anitbiotics and eventually it went away. It occasionally flares up but only mildly.

My was bad but the Dr. felt i should try the non surgical first.

    So far so good.
