Cool TR: #8 Madloch to Stierloch

With Stacey gone back to the states our smaller group had to look a little farther out to find the good snow. We headed out early and skied pistes down to Rauz where we caught a bus up to Zurs. From there it was up to the summit of the Madloch.

    A lonely little lift

The Stierloch area that we were headed to has some steep slopes that need to be traversed out across to get to the aspect that Andy felt was safe to ski. Herbie admitted to always getting a little un-easy when he heads out there and I don't blame him.

Well at least we were obviously on the windward side at the start

Following avi protocal spacing on the way out

We did see some evidence of slide activity from the past week on our way out. Past the steepest parts we started to enjoy ourselves a little more.

Andy & Steve with the Roggalspitze in the background

Todays playground: Stierloch Tal with the Schafberg & Mehlsack peaks

Once agin, Andy found the snow.

He found it. He liked it

I love the Arlberg because the runs seem to go on for ever

The group after the first piece of skiing with our tracks behind us

Further down the run had some steeper pitches to get down to the bottom of the valley.

If I can't have deep, give me steep

The line is just to the right of the rock formation

From here we had a mellow ski out to the Village of Zug.

    Great ice formations

A great looking line called the Stierfall

Yet another line for another day

    Zug

Great little lift on the farthest reaches of the Arlberg ski area

A break for lunch at the top of Lech with an unbelievable Tiroler Grirstle (pork hash with onions and fried eggs on top).

I think they filmed part of Bridget Jones Diary II in this place. Impotant info, I know

The view over to Warth. We'd be there in a few more days

I have no idea what this peak is but there is a lot of skiing there. Anyone know?

We were running late as we had to ski in a night GS that evening so we cheated on the way home.

You can't ski home every day

A minor scratch from the days festivities

The Ski Club Arlberg is the local ski club in the Area. It has been in existance since 1901 and has produced and been lead by many famous skiers. Egon Zimmerman, Carl Schranz and Patrick Ortlieb to name a few. This evening was their annual ski race, the 16th running of the "Hannes Schneider Rennen". It was being held under the lights in Stuben.

It is funny that my thread about "My conversation with Bode..." has re-surfaced. Once again, here I am forced to race and my choice is Sugar Daddies or Monster im85's with Freerides. Since the freerides served me well in the past, it was really no contest.

I have never been a really good ski racer, although I find it fun. Tonight was my 15 minutes of ski racing fame.

And the winner in the 30yr old guest division is..

God I look like a dork Total surprise. I was going to go home early, but am glad that I stayed. My brother Christoph got 3rd place and Steve got second in his age division. My father is also in the picture as he was presenting the trophys.

My buddy Eskimo, from Greenland, drinking from the tupperware

I think I'm onto something with this racing on AT gear thing....

Hi, the peak you are asking the name for is called the 'Omeshorn'. It does indeed have a great runs. The front in the picture shows 'Hoelltobl' and 'Horaplaetz'.

    I needed that, thanks.

Can't believe you have a ski race named after you.

    Nice summer bump.

Ya, I'm psyched to revisit the Arlberg next year. Gonna be there in January for the same week as we always have.

I like end of January beginning February. My usual schedule may change however, due to my upcoming bachelorhoodness......

We are already locked into our week with plane tickets bought (or mileage plus points used). First week in Jan. A little early, a little on the crowded side, but it works with the visit to the inlaws for Xmas in Germany.

We have also done the same week for 3 out of the last 5 years and everytime has been around thigh deep! I prolly just jinxed myself, so actually in retrospect it has sucked donkey balls so it damn well better snow this time!

H-man, I know you usually go later in the year, if you do happen to change your schedule to be there early Jan, let us know.

I'll be in the Paznaun mid January to mid February, possibly with other mags. I might even have a few beds free for Europe mags. I'd definitely be up for an Arlberg/Verwallgruppe mini.
