The almost not a Trip Report TR

So last night I made a romantic dinner for my wife complete with a bottle of wine, we both wound up having a glass which left me to finish the rest of the bottle. Good times

Moving forward to the morning, I'm nudged awake by my wife who starts yelling at me to get up cause I've got to usher at church and we're leaving in a half hour. I rub my eyes and look out the window. What's that white stuff on the lawn...it looks like SNOW!!!! So quickly I'm dressed and take the kid out to play in the snow

I quickly start thinking about where my rock skis are so I can make an attempt to slide down the front hill when it hits me, I bet killington has twice whats on my lawn.

Actual conversation with my wife after checking the computer

[me] Killington says they've got 7 inches

[wife] You're supposed to usher at church

[me]tell your father that I'll tell God he said hi, after all I'll be closer to him on top of a mountain then I would be sitting in a pew

    [wife] You're insane

[me] So does that mean I can go?

[wife] Be back by 5:45 cause I have to teach skating tonight

The next ten minutes are a blur as I try to find every piece of gear that I need to snag some October turns.

Gloves-check Backpack-check Boots-where the fuck are they? Skis still have storage wax on them, scraped off in about 30 seconds and thrown into the back of the car Poles found in the back of the closet, skins well fuck em I'm gonna boot anyway, what sweetie, shit thats right we left the other car down at her mothers house, gotta go pick it up, threw some water in the nalgene, toss the goggles and helmet in the back and head on out.

Drop the wife and kid off at church and gun it towards rutland hoping to find the land of milk and honey.

Of course I nearly bail on the drive when there is no snow to be seen once I hit Bennington but the clouds lift to show me the snowline. Once again I almost turn around after hitting manchester, no snow again, but again the clouds lift and there's snow in the hills. I arrive in downtown rutland to find no snow and a steady drizzle. Undaunted this time I hit route 4 and gun it towards K-Mart. I begin the climb towards the gap and miraculously snow starts apearing, looking outside my window I realize that its still lightly snowing and there must be 7" which means theres probably more up top

    reaching K-base there's definately snow

Superstar has tracks on it but I'm heading to the canyons
I'm an hour and 44 minutes late for the 10 AM meeting

Like I said there was lots of snow

I hit the canyon quad and began my accent up downdraft

Very grey and overcast but the snow was wet and heavy so coverage would be good

    Junction of cascade and downdraft

On the way up I passed a bunch of Killingtons "LOCKED AND LOADED" snowguns

Guess somebody forgot to turn the safety off

Reached the summit and took this wonderful self portrait

Nice! Better than what a lot of us did today, I'm sure.

It was a long hike up and very windy up top so I took shelter in the old gondi building

After resting up for 5-10 minutes I gear up and take the skis off the pack, I take one turn and realize that while the wet snow makes for great coverage it's not hero snow, I take a bad spill right onto a slightly covered rock my hip screams in pain and I pick myself up and remind myself that I need to be more careful since I'm skiing alone. I proceed back down, finding snow ranging anywhere from light fluffy pow to wet chowdery mank. Snow snakes and water bars are everywhere so you had to be very careful but there were some really nice turns to be had in spots

I made turns pretty much all the way down cascade took a couple more falls when snowsnakes reared up to grab my skis but remarkably did not hit one rock, probably because I sideslipped the bottom where I knew from climbing up there was a giant stream running underneath the snow which left large rocks just underneath the surface

All told it was a great day for October turns and I'm stoked!

Way to go Laseranimal. Wish I had been there along with you like last year. My kids' sports schedules prevented me from being up at Killington this weekend.

this bit seemed prophetic- I'm a cut n pasten bitch tonight
Unless that is Wilma turns into a major storm, rips across florida, and forms another tropical link to New England under a colder pattern that drops 8'-15' of snow next week - then everyone will open.
thought the water vapor pics looked interesting
