    online maps for the alps...

i'm looking for online maps for the alps, especially the french alps:

so far i got this for..

    .. switzerland: http://www.swissinfo-geo.org/index.htm
    .. austria: http://www.austrianmap.at/
.. and the state of tirol in austria with some more features: http://www.tirol.gv.at/applikationen...eodienst.shtml

but i'm desperately missing an online map of the french alps. anyone of the euromags?

should this go to tech talk?

Thanks for digging around for this stuff, greg. I've been putting off stumping up for the IGN digi stuff, and this is a lot easier than scanning

Do you realize that you've just posted an admission of ignorance so breathtaking that it disqualifies you from commenting on any political or economic threads from here on out?

I'd get the IGN software the link above at least as far as the topo maps go is very out of date. - The position of glaciers and ski lifts is more than 25 years old, at least on the Verbier and Mt Blanc region!

thanks idris, but isn't the ign limited on france as is swisstopo on swiss? but even if I had the choice, I'ld still prefer the swiss maps. in my oppinion they are the best in europe. better than geman's, austrian's or french's. they've got this neatly eloberated shadow which immediatly gives you an idea of the 3dimensional outlook of the topography. but maybe you're right and they are a little behind with their glaciers, at least in the online version. the second best are the french (ign), in my oppinion. (and, no, it's not a patriotic thingy, i'm neither swiss nor french )

anyway, I'm using these onlinemaps just for planning. whenever I actually go for it, I buy the respective.

Here is an additional link for topographic online-maps of France (IGN maps):

    http://sandre.eaufrance.fr/geoviewer/index.php

And yes, Swiss topo maps are the best in the world. Indeed, their original inventor/creator (Eduard Imhof) was quite a big figure in academic cartography.
    (I'm not a suiss either)
