the great mounting thread

since there are so many mounting combinations these days (AT, tele, alpine, center mount, etc. etc.) and we have so many threads about 'where should i mount my...' and because the search function doesn't like to search for some words (pr, g4, big, etc) why don't we put it all in one thread...

state:

ski and length
binder
boot
differential of mount to recommended mouting place
how do you like the feel for the terrain you ski

alpine boots
mounted at mark

great for light pow, steeps, corn and firm, definitely too far forward for mank, heavier pow, and higher speeds

almost perfect, not too much tip dive, still very quick, maybe could be another cm further back for higher speeds in chop

Mounted on the center mark.

Very neutral. Float well in powder, very snappy to turn and carve the hard stuff way better than they should.

K2 AK Launcher - 195cm
Naxo 01 VRS
Lange L10 - 311mm soles
mounted at toe line on ski

Great for pow, crud bustin and cruisin at high speeds. Good spot for touring too. Maybe a little too far back for really tight krank turns. Perfect spot for wide stance skiing and landings.

I love the set-up, although they have not had sufficient on snow testing yet. Only a couple of days, and only a few really good laps on soft. Will repot more upon return from Utah.

185cm Salomon Pocket Rockets
S912Ti Binders mounted at factory center mark
Lange Comp 120 LF Boots (317mm sole length, 27 Mondo)

Way too far forward on a ski that soft, too damn much tail. When they are re-mounted with Freerides next year the mount will be back 5cm's or so.

Ski 180 Dynastar Concepts
Binding Salomon 9-12
Mounted 2 cm back of the line

Skis MUCH better then when it was right on the line, when it was on the line the ride was choppy and you had a tendancy to either pitch forward or were unable to release the tail. Once it was remounted it was SO much better, finally made me enjoy bumps for the first time since the flex is soft in the tip to stiffer in the tail.

Ski 178 Volkl G4
Binding Freeride w/ shim
Boot either a Dabello V12 or Salomon Evolution 2 with Vibram sole
Mount right on the line

Got to ski the new mount last saturday after my boots showed up late friday night. All of my concerns about freeride durablity were instantly put to rest. Adding a shim made a huge difference. Its not much heightwise(its actually the plastic hanging tag for a pair of Technica plates) Maybe .5-1.5 mm at most. Didn't feel any slop in the freeride Dabello combo but there was a slight difference in my ability to edge on REALLY hard snow/ice but I can't say that Alpine binders would have been any better. This is definately the one rig I can take anywhere I want to and not have to worry about what the conditions are going to be

Ski 180 CMH Explosive
Binding Salomon 977
Boot Dabello V12
Mounted Center

Nothing wrong with the mount as is but I might move them back 1-2 to see if I can get more float without losing manuverability

Ski 180 Alpina Cross Terrain
Binding G3 Targa
Boot Scarpa T2
Mounted Chord Center

Light touring setup, I think the mount puts you right on the sweet spot but comparatively the G3/T2 is plenty enough for that kind of ski. If you were going to ski it with 3pins and leathers you might consider going 1 or 2 forward since the Cross Terrain is a pretty stiff touring ski

Skis - two very different flexing bro blems(Stiffs), one with steel toeplate experiment, one without.
Binders: Freerides
Boots: Dolomite 5 buckles with zipfits and tongue pad.

As people that continue to ski the Bros with demo bindings are finding, the sweet spot on the Bros is very precise, allowing a max 4mm drift before you notice a big difference. Yet guys like DTM and karl Stall are loving them 1.5 cm's back. When you hit the center point we establsihed, you KNOW you have hit money.

Legend Pros 186cm
Look p14 with maxplate lifter
Lange Comp 120FR

80.5 with a flat tape from the tail.

Perfect for me (5'10" and 160 lbs). If you're just skiing them on powder you might want to mount at 79.5 but since they're my one-ski-quiver, I like them just where they are. Excellent for crud-busting - really really good stability. LOOOOOOOOONG turns on groomers.

180 AK Lawnchair
Voile Hardwire

Pins at 1cm ahead of chord center, also lines up with pins on ski Boot Toe mark. I love them how it is, if anything I'd move them 1 cm back.

182 Line Mothership
Voile Hardwire
same boot
3 cm back from recommended pin line on 180 karhu jak (same ski). Much better, I redrilled after initial mount of 1 cm back and they had way too much tail.

Also have...

193 Line Dragon
Look/Rossi KX Pro
Lange L10 311mm sole
Mounted to boot midsole (sidecut center mount)

Sweet spot, especially for landing switch; plenty of tail. THese are quite a bit of ski for quick spins in the park, but surprisingly quick otherwise.

180 Dynastar Concepts
Look TX (they suck)
Lange L10 311mm sole
Mounted to midsole

I could go for about 1cm back on these, but this is their 3rd mount (first two were my great Marker realization). Good spot for bumps and riding switch, but too far forward for everything else.

Me: 6ft, 165lbs. Type II.5 skier.

186 Dynastar Legend Pros
p14
Salomon course plug

80.5 from tail, as Seldom did. Good for all mountain east coast. For more consistantly deep snow, I would mount another cm or 1.5 cm further back from this point.

188 Dynastar Inspired
p12
same boot

Mounted on the line, I dig em just as they are.

175 Dynastar Troublemaker
p12 jib
same boot

Mounted on the line. Since i now mostly ski park with these, i may move them another 1.5 cm forward.

AK Rocket, 190cm
Voile HD Mountaineer
Scarpa T-1
Mounted very close to alpine boot center. I did this so I could reuse some holes and for easier turn initiation (the Mountaineer is basically a 3-pin cross-country binding).
I love this set-up. Great for touring as it is light and fat and it skis well too. The Mountaineer is probably the least “active” binding on the market, so I’m glad I’m well forward of chord center.

Solly X-Wave 9 305mm sole
Mounted on the line. Love 'em. Everyday ski. Great on hardpack and still float in pow due to the Volkl rear mounting position.

Solly X-Wave 9 305mm sole
Mounted on the line. Perfect. Only use this setup for BC and pow over 15cm.

Dynastar Troublemaker, 175cm
Salomon 912ti center mounted
Salomon X-Wave 10 26.5

Too far forward. Very squirrely on the firm and ice. Hard to hold an edge. Soft tip made kept them fun in powder but 2cm back would have been much better for everything but park.

R:Ex 177cm
Fritschi Freeride medium, center mounted
Salomon X-Wave 10 26.5
Mounted flat at first, made them difficult to carve and hold an edge. Added a 1/4" shim to rear of binding, now they're perfect. No loss in stability or powder performance. Much better on ice.

Line mothership 182 (first year)
Solly 912
Alpine
1.5cm back of recommended

Skis great in pow, holds good on the groomers, and at high speeds.
I've tried other line skis (old skogen and 1260 @182) with demos and found that they all seem to ski alot better at high speeds when mounting position is moved back at least 1cm.

Excellent, quick feel on hardpack. A little tough to balance in pow or mank or anything else you can sink into.

I then put these on my Spatulas and mounted some Tyrolias (+ and - 1.5cm adjustment) at -2, so the possible positions were -0.5, -2, and -3.5.

Same ski, Tyrolia LD12 Railflex, -3.5 (3cm back)
Feels like a Volkl now: tips are a long way away and it takes some work to drive them. Lost some snap and edge to edge quickness. Much easier in mank, though.

-0.5
Binding felt a bit different, but couldn't detect any ski difference with +0.

-2
Much improved: a tiny bit less snap on hardback and tips need a bit more pressure than -0.5, but they no longer feel remote. Still easier in mank than -0.5: tails hang up less. Probably the all-mountain sweet spot.

185 Volant Machete FB
S912 Ti
323 boot sole
mounted on the midsole mark

Midsole for these heavy tanks is pretty far forward on the ski. They were really quick and fun for a big, heavy ski on the groomers and in light chop. Yesterday I took them out in powder and beat-up snow and I was wishing for more ski up front. The front end is stiff enough that tip dive is not overly hard to achieve with poor technique. I'm going to move them back 2cm and see what happens. That said, they still go right through just about anything in their path without missing a beat.
