TR: Carbon Peak (9 Jan 2010)

The ski area is skiing very poor
So we went out searching for some more.
To Carbon Peak we went to ski
The Spoon, another line of cutlery.

Backcountry snow is a bit touchy now
Northeast aspects have some pow
But wind loaded snow makes it bad
And the surface hoar just makes me sad.

But southern aspects are less risky
So we decided to go get a bit frisky
On the Spoon of Carbon so we went
And so it was a day well-spent.

Here we saw our line from afar

But when we got out of the car
Goldenboy swore up a storm
“I forgot my poles on this darned morn”

The trailhead was a timely drive
Takes fourty-five minutes of our time
So turning around was not an option
Goldenboy made a great concoction

You see, he still really wanted to ski
So improvise some poles did he
“They are Black Diamond's new beta poles to test
Surely the grips will work the best.”

The poles feature a goggle brush

And ice-chopper to add to the cush.

So off we went for adventure ahead

Our souls were looking to get fed.

So we began our ridge climb up to the top

And by this dead tree we chose to stop.

The hike took longer than we planned

But at the summit we both did stand

We always like the lovely summit view
The Anthracites do surely woo

Can you spot the Crested Butte resort?
Or some Elk fourteeners can you report?

So down the Spoon of Carbon we did go
We did have some bits of variable snow.
But goldenboy shredded his very best
Putting his beta ski poles to a great big test.

Despite the less than perfect snow
I sure enjoyed my turns, even down low.
I simply like to ski in the backcountry
The whole package seems to just suit me.

Overall a good day was had
Both of us were very glad
To have skied today this Carbon Peak
We found the adventure we did seek.

As we watched the Castles eat the sun
We reflected upon our day of fun.

I wish that every day could be like this
Days full of sheer happiness and bliss.

Nice. I used to have a cat named Carbon after a great day on that very mountain.

Thanks for the memories

GB gets points for ingenuity, but not for style.

I saw this guy booting off of Indy pass this fall. Loads of style.

fun TR!

I'm very impressed by goldenboy's poles. Any estimates on when they'll be available in the retail market?

but would you rather skin without poles for 3400'? That was my bigger concern.

Honestly, they weren't that bad, I barely even noticed while skiing. Plus the whole situation was making me laugh, so I had that going for me, which was nice.
