Miniature Jackson Hole

Figured I'd share this little video with you guys...

My first attempt at tilt shift miniature faking. Shot from the top of the parking garage in downtown Jackson, WY with a Canon HV20 and all effects done in post on Final Cut. Can't wait to try this when it's a little greener and the cars and roads are clean!

This is cool, and I dig what you are doing, but the Tram and the mountain would be waaaaay cooler. I mean, you've just shot anytown, USA, when you live right next to The Shitsville...

Second this, I read the tilt shift wiki entry, and am even more confused now.

In simple (like if you were telling a 5 year old) what are you doing?

I get it, sure would look cool on the mountain at the tram or lifts and stuff. I wonder what it would look like applying the effect to some cool POV footage.

What the hell is with the truck driving on the sidewalk at 45 sec ?

haha... i'll give a basic non-techy rundown of tilt/shift... it's a lens used mainly for architecture photography because of its ability to keep lines straight instead of having them bend towards the sky... they also come in handy for macro shots because they can drastically blur the background... recently there's been a big trend in simulating a tilt/shift lens in photoshop (here in after effects for video purposes) from aerial photographs to make them look like miniature scenes like in a snow-globe... essentially how this occurs is your eyes playing a trick on you... all that exists in a tilt/shift effect are two horizontal bands of blurring... the top usually consisting of 60% of the frame and the bottom consisting of about 10% of the frame which leaves about 20% of the frame in focus... cool stuff... nice vid...

it's 'miniature faking', not only tilt-shift. with miniature-faking selective areas are blurred to give the impression of a very narrow focus field.

Yeah, The resort would have been cool too, but I was just testing to see if i could do it at all. Mountain is closed and I just found out about this process on Saturday, so... Next year or maybe this summer I'll get to do that one!
Most people, (like the examples posted) use tilt shift lenses (which are super expensive) and a digital SLR still camera to shoot a legit time lapse. I'm doing mine super basic on a $400 refurbished camera, no tripod. It's a work in progress.
Greener grass and clean cars, probably fewer shadows, would make it look better too, I'm sure. But like I said, this was just a test,

so crazy...looks fake but it's not! i could see this style popping up in lots of ski flicks soon...like a cool, lego, stop frame, mini ski world intro. keep it up HT

So what is the process in FCP? Paint a mask for each scene and then apply a blur? I know how to do it for stills in PS but hadn't seen it in FCP yet.

I've got some fun ideas and the great thing is, everyone's videos would look totally different.
After watching a lot of them you start looking at your world a lot differently as well.
You start looking at roof tops for shooting angles, the colors of buildings, and eventually you see the world you're walking around in as a miniature.
Really cool change of perspective!

Uptight pow in slow motion tilt shift, zooming out to show its nothing but a model and four or five guys running the most elaborate puppetry set ever

In the next scene Ian Macintosh goes flying off some retarded death line wearing a Gumby suit.
