Ever Wonder What It's Like To Be Avi Buried for Almost 5 Minutes? See This Video!
See the vid:
http://www.bdel.com/avalung
Rider: Chris Cardello
Describe the experience:
When the slide propagated, I tried to remain as composed as possible and make sure my AvaLung was in. As I was getting buried and the slide slowed, I threw one hand up and with my other hand I grasped the AvaLung, which had been ripped out of my mouth during the turbulent ride. While I was buried, I tried to be as calm as possible—I knew my hand was exposed so my crew would be digging me out shortly. I was able to breathe through the AvaLung, but it was difficult due to the snow jammed down my throat.

Whoa! Holy crap. Interesting to note his buddy had a plastic shovel.
Be careful about buying snowboard goggles for skiing. Snowboard goggles come in right eye and left eye (for goofy-footers) dominant models. This can make it hard to see correctly when skiing because you are facing straight down the hill, not sideways.

That's some effective marketing video...
Interesting to have the cam & mic running...seems like you can hear his heart and/or respiration and some squeeking which I'm guessing is the valve on the AvaLung.

I do not ski the back country, if I did I would do so with an Avalung. Not sure why anyone would not.

Yowsa. Best case scenario to say the least -- one hand above the snow guaranteed the response time. Being down 15-35 mins likely with a beacon search.

Sickening; like being trapped under ice… you can see daylight, but nothing you can do to save yourself.

That was fucking terrifying!
Repeat after me: I-Do-Not-Want-To-Be-Buried
Show that to everyone who says
"you can just point it and ski out an avi"
"just make an air pocket"
"just turn your head a little and the avalung is right there. no problem"
"just swim like it's water and you'll end up on top"

What strikes me about this is the intensity of the terrain and the rapid rescue.
Many are getting to the point with high tech beacons and avalungs, that the thought pops in - " I'll just breath out of the tube and rescue will be here in no time..."
What really needs to be hammered home is many of the pitches that we ski could produce traumatic slides that a beacon would serve only as as tool to recover a body. The Jackson recovery for instance took what 6 minutes? . It is amazing that this one was not the case.
At any rate, I use an avalung and beacon with every outing.

The slope to his right had fractured and gone at 0'32s.
He kept making turns for another six seconds before the snow around him crazy paved.Last edited by Roo; 01-16-2009 at 06:35 PM.
