    I'm no math major but....

Can anyone explain to me how Beaver Creek can claim 4,040 vertical feet of terrain with a base level of 8,100ft and a summit elevation of 11,440ft? What's up with that? Someone posted on here recently about midwest resorts lying about vert, but giving Beaver the benefit of the doubt they're still 600+ vertical feet off. I don't really care that much, there are a bajillion other places I'd ride before I'd ride Beaver (the mountain that is), but what the fuck Gus?

Check the base of Arrowhead. It used to be it's own area, until they created Bachelor Gulch, which connected the two. The vert isn't continuous, but it's good for marketing.

How about places like loveland an a-basin claiming vert based on hike to terrain? At least LL doesn't claim vert from the top of the ridge to the base of the valley ( I hope).

I see, they don't even put an * up on their page explaining that...but thanks for the heads up man, and thanks for providing so much entertainment last night, and quite possibly tonight too. The meatloaf recipe was classic.

most mountains that you can't ski from the summit to the lowest base do the same thing...

Blurred nailed the answer on the vert, but this line shows your ignorance the best: A "bajillion other places" before Beaver Creek? Step out of MI and explore. On any given day I'd take that mountain over 75% of the mountains in the U.S.- Decent to great terrain, no crowds, good snow and a first class operation. Or just hang at home in Buttfuck, MI doing lift map math and going to Boyne on the weekends. You make the call.

Ok man, I don't even know why I'm responding to you, but like you said I live in Buttfuck, MI and since I have the time to do lift map, I figure I have the time to entertain you a bit too.

Places I've ridden and lived* (and would any day before riding Beav) in no particular order
    Sugar Bowl, CA*
    Kirkwood, CA
    Alpine Meadows, CA
    Squaw Valley, CA
    Mt. Baker, WA
    Stevens pass, WA*
    Crystal Mountain, WA
    Bridger Bowl, MT
    Big Sky, MT
    Grand Foghee, WY
    Jackson Hole, WY
    Mammoth Mountain, CA

and shit, I don't do Boyne, that place has forgotten that its a ski hill. You don't have to tell me how much the riding where I live sucks, I already know that, but I still get out because I love snowboarding and having a good time with my friends. I'm just trying to make the best of my situation....have a nice day

I had him pegged for a Pando man...or Mulligan's Hollow.

Snurfing at Pando...those were the days. Try that at the Beav.

For reals? So you've never even skied in CO or UT but you can talk shit about Beaver CreeK? On your list a few of those areas are in the league of B.C. (ie: Big Sky, Jackson, maybe Squaw and Mammoth), but beyond that.....

I'm not ragging on the other areas your list, they're all decent, but you're silly to armchair criticize ski areas, much less states, you never skied while you sit in MI. Oh, my bad, snowboarded.

OK, you're right, Jackson is a one big league up from Beaver Creek, and so are Big Sky and Squaw when they have snow. Probably even Baker, K-Wood, Mammoth and Crystal, again, when they have decent snow, but as I said above, on any given day Beaver Creek is better then 75% of the resorts in the U.S.

But think what you want, avoid B.C.- pull off I-70 at Vail, or even better Keystone, Breck or Copper- nothing to ski there, no reason to bother with the extra drive, the place is low rent and sucks donkey balls.

No, I've ridden in CO. I rode Breck and Keystone and was really unimpressed. The snow conditions were marginal when I was there. Those mountains seemed pretty flat, and I hadn't even been out to Tahoe, or WA yet at that time. It was pretty hardpack and just slightly better than an average day in the U.P. of Michigan save for the huge amount of vert. Not saying I would never ride Beaver Creek, I'm just saying that there are a lot of places I'd rather ride. Hell, I'm more interested in Copper than Beaver Creek, but maybe that's because a friend of mine is the director of the snowboard school there and I'd be able to get cheap tix. I also have Steamboat on my "to-hit list" as well...

I've never ridden in Utard, but I would like to check out the backcountry around Brighton. I'd also like to Ride snowbird, and Powder Mountain. I'm not wild about Utah for three reasons:

    1)Mormons.
    2)3.2% beer.
3)Ultra-dry snow...I know, I know its borderline blasphemous to say this, but I prefer maritime snow to ultra, ultra dry blow probably because I don't ski....

For one, you need way more dry snow to create that "bottomless" feel, and for two dry snow doesn't stick to rock and itself like maritime snow does so you're more likely to take shark bites, and you don't get the kind of features that you get with a denser snow....like spines, big nasty convex rollovers etc...

But to each their own. I still wanna check out Utah 'cause it is an incredible experience to ride really, really deep blower, but I wanna get back to Baker again a lot worse....

"But that's just like my opinion man...."

Sorry, I forgot to mention that all of BC is flatter then your sister's chest. I was just bullshitting, avoid the place at all cost, it really does suck. Breck, Keystone and Copper are way better choices.

Thanks dude. I didn't realize that the rocks are what create the terrain...

What I was trying to get at was that the way the snow interacts with the rocks is different in Maritime areas than in those with a more continental snowpack.

Yeah, I got that, but that is stupid. And for the record, the snow is not always dry, despite the PR.

Well I already know that Breck sucks BTDT, and I know that Keystone blows balls too BTDT. If I were to do CO anytime soon, I'd want to do A-basin, Steamboat, Wolf Creek, and Silverton; but of course that geographical distribution is kind of tough to do in one trip unless you have lots of time. And like I said, the only reason I want to check out Copper is because I probably wouldn't have to pay for tickets, and considering CO lift ticket prices that's a major selling point. I'm sorry your panties got all bunched up 'cause I wondered what was up with Beav's vert claims, but if you go back through the thread you'll see I never once said Beaver sucks. I just said there are a lot of places that I'd rather ride, pretty much all of them outside CO, for good reason.

I know, just like the Maritimes CAN get really dry shit too. But on average, the intermountain snow is still significantly drier than the snow in the Maritime ranges.

yeah, other than the lack of good local riding, it's also gotta suck living on/next to a pretty amazing Lake Michigan, where houses are actually affordable, you're close enough to big cities [grand rapids] but not too close, short drive to wrigley field and/or oHare, and people still wave to each other.

Thanks Tye (I caught the sarcasm, so I figured I'd dabble in it myself a little)

...you're right Lake Michigan totally sucks. I hate the fact that I live here in the summer. Its terrible, 70-75 degree freshwater, the occasional surf day, and girls playing volleyball on the numerous public beaches all summer long are a total drag..

I'm not a navigator but it seems from the trail map that Bachlor Gulch is at 8100 but the Lower Beaver Creek Mountain Express Lift, damn thats a mouthful, is lower in elevation, maybe 600 feet lower or so I'd guess.

But BC sucks, so why worry?
