    Midwest Michigan Mini 2009

Any interest in a Midwest get together this season? What weekends work for everyone? Late February, early March for spring conditions looks good for my schedule.

I only included 2 options. I'm not sure what else that is easily accessible would be worth skiing. I'm open for any ideas, but do need plenty of time to plan around my school schedule.

Nate, you know where I stand...I just sent you a PM...but for those that don't, I could go either way, the only reason I mentioned Nubs as a possibility was because they've got a good park and a superpipe which may not matter to many of you, but its something fun to do in spring conditions as far as I'm concerned, but I don't really care, Cab is a shorter drive and a lot of fun too. Either way, I just think it'd be fun to get a bunch of us Midwest Mags together for a mini, and over-run someplace....

I should have added a few other places to the list. We could always meet up at crystal to slay the moving trees. Boyne / Boyne Highlands may not be bad. I just figured Nubs and Cab are much more laid back and have good terrain options.

Yeah, I'd be down for Boyne or the Highlands as well. I'd rather not mess with Xtal, but if that's what people want to do I'll do it. Although, it is pretty fun to "ski moving trees" there.

all could be fun. however, I think you/we should wait till the snow is right and hit up sleeping bear. I scoped it last summer. 500-ish vert, consistant 30-40deg pitch, prob the best "steep" skiing in MI! ...and prob also the only place where we'd need to dig a pit 1st.
When seconds count...ski patrol, SAR or the cops are only minutes away...

If they call it Tourist Season, why cant we shoot them?

lets do the time warp again... time for the anual Midwest Mini wish thread!

Actually with the great start this year and the resulting chatter we might just stand a chance of actully making it happend with more than 2 mags this year.

Boyne: Mountain yes, Highlands no for it is teh suck. If Harbor Springs is the host then I vote Nubs for sure.

Cab would be fine by me and it has nothing to do with my pass. heh. Earned turns are possible both both slack country and in the National Forrest nearby. But if we get stcuk in bounds Cab will grow small small very quickly.

The mountain is probably the best bet given that the date would have to be picked well in advance... plenty of terrain to stave off borebom and some good trees if there is pow. (worth noting that the glades off FIS have been expanded this year).

I'd also suggest doiong this before march so we have at least a fighting chance of lucking into a storm. 1st week of Feb.?

You're joking right? Sorry if my sarcasmometer is not operating properly, but sleeping bear is right on the lake and therefore privy to wicked wind scouring. I don't think you could ever ski/ride those things unless a big system came through with really really heavy snow and equally strong Easterly winds...Sorry, but I don't think that'll work...

The Boyne Mountain option might actually not be a bad idea. An old abandoned area called "thunder mountain" (that is comparable vert wise) is really near Boyne and maybe we could make a weekend out of it. Do the mountain one day, then hike "thunder mountain" the second? Just a thought...of course, if we're going to go this route then we should, as FNS advised try to do this sometime in Feb in the hopes we could hit an LES cycle...

I'd be interested in meeting up with some others at Caberfae or Nub's. Not a big fan of Boyne properties. I'm at the big C most every weekend anyhow.

My vote for cab has almost everything to do with my pass. If we were at Cab all weekend, I'd plan on some hiking.

I could probably spring for Boyne for one trip. Spring time is still better for me, but if we decide on a date early enough I could change things around.

just bumping this to prove all is well in the world... sun still rises in the east, sets in the west, and all attempts at a midwest mini = fail.

Still hoping this could work. My wife wants to ski the weekend of valentine's day, so we might go up to Cab if I can get Sunday off. I'm also planning on another trip up there the first weekend of March.

I'd be in for a weekend at the Cab.

As it's a pretty short drive from Detroit Area and I've got a pass.

I won't tell you where to ski 'cause I'm injured, but if people are meeting up around Mountain, Highlands or Nubs, I'll man the cooler and just drink instead!

Maybe we should try nailing down a DATE first? mmmmmkay?

min lead time 2 weeks for planing...

I'd suggest we take weekend of 2/13 out of the running for the obvious, if somewhat P-dub-ed, reason... also lets give it at least 2 weeks lead time for planning / scheduling / groveling / pleading purposes.

    Sooner = better IMO...

    2/6?
    2/20?

^^^ I agree, if we're gonna do this we need to set a time to do it. But regardless of where and when, count me in. Looking at the dates mentioned, I could go either way.

Ok - lets get this rolling...

The concensus for venue seems to be (in no particular order) Caberfae, Boyne Mountain or Nubs Knob so for the sake of a timely decission lets choose between these.

For those planning / wanting to attend, please rank order the 3 venues according to your preference and list you top 3 prefered weekends (starting w/ 2/6 in order of preference, Not excluding Valentines Day weekend - if it wins, it wins.)

The tally's will be as follows:

    VENUE: #1 pick = 3 points, #2 = 2 pts., # 3= 1 pt. Most points wins.
    DATE: Most Popular Weekend wins.

Voting starts now and closes 1/28. I'll compile the results on the 29th.

    I'll start.

    Caberfae, Boyne Mountain, Nubs
    2/21, 2/27, 2/28

(Nate - any chance you can swap a shift?)

FNS - No chance on swapping shifts, it's an internship and I need to stay with one seasoned medic until I graduate.

    My Vote.

    Caberfae, Nubs, Mountain.

I don't know if I would be able to make it anyway, but for the sake of argument.... don't most of the people replying in this thread ski Caberfae all the time anyway? Nubs is the only place that I would leave the U.P. to ski if my decision was based on terrain alone. The 'fae is an upgrade if you normally ski Brighton or Swiss Valley, but it isn't exactly a destination resort.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but the waterpark at the mountain is freakin' sweet! That would probably be my second choice.
