    MPC #27: HDR - Jan 4 - 17

    MPC #27: HDR - January 4 - 17

High Dynamic Range (HDR), " is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of luminances between light and dark areas of a scene than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDR is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging

An HDR photograph is traditionally created out of a 32-bit merge of three or more exposures, and then tone-mapped to complete the process.

    Software for tonemapping:

    http://www.hdrsoft.com/

I will also accept all watermarked entries, any single-photo hdr, and indeed any other non-traditional photoshop techniques that might be used to expand on the visible range of your photograph.

    Example:

    The Rules:

    1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.

    2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.

    3. The contest moderator will choose 5 of the photos to put in a poll for the mags to vote on and decide the winner.

    4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way not an option)

    5. In the event of a tie, the contest moderator will have the deciding vote.

    6. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.

    7. The winner has 3 days to start a new contest or 2nd place becomes the new winner.

    ok.

    Alternate topic is "tree"

I will still accept any hdr related pic as detailed above, or also any pic that contains a tree, is a picture of a tree, or metaphorically is "tree-like."

"Tree" entries will compete against hdr pics, with the explicit understanding that the tenants of classical photography apply to both equally.

All rules still apply, we just now have two possible topics for entry in this one MPC.

    Here's a competitive "tree" example:

Doc, I think you should stick with the HDR theme. It should be easy since it actually allows a wider range of subject matter than the usual contest.

Here is a photo I took of some snowboarders at Mountain Creek in NJ. They were playing around with a kicker and this was one of the best (and coolest) boarders there, in my opinion. I have toned this down, from my recent HDR post. I hope you like it. I had processed it in color but I think it looked much better in B&W.

    *Yeah. Tenets.

It looks like we're off to a good start.

I encourage everyone to shoot and submit an HDR,
    And
I would like to keep the alternate theme alive
    Because
it's technically easier to see a tree than the high dynamic range

and when it comes to this sort of thing

    I'm all about being easy.

    Additionally,

Bonus points will be given to any HDR picture of a tree that is better than all of the other entries combined.

Lots of trees in this one.

I can tone map (single image "HDR") it if you want. I dont want to though.

BTW, Doc that is a really nice shot.

    Don't.

The skier could use some work getting out of the backseat though.

    I'm your huckleberry...

Not a fan of HDR. It's way over used and very rarely appropriate for the given image. Everyone wants to do it cuz it's the "new" thing but most people don;t even grasp why a scene might work as HDR. You need a scene that has a dynamic range beyond what a normal exposure can capture, usually several stops outside of the range. Even then it's not always a good thing.

    </end rant>

    Tree entry...
