i came out of the backcountry at 2:15 and saw that the entire upper mountain was shut down (tram/sub/thunder/gondi).

when i saw signs asking for schoolers to check in, i knew something was up.

rumors of multiple small slides were rampant. i hope that all caught are accounted for and uninjured.

another reminder to stay safe out there, choose routes carefully, watch out for people above and below you, and wear a beacon + carry appropriate gear even inbounds -- especially with a new storm cycle rolling in.

Just heard from a "credible" source there was one death. Apparently, a local. I hope my source was mistaken.

don't know if anyone was actually in the alta 2 slide. it ripped out less than five minutes after i skied it. the other slide was definitely at tower 3. the skiers left side after it opens up. the section you would have to traverse to. I really hope that there was only one person in it. When i was there one person said his friend was in it. the only four other people there said they didn't see anyone else but that doesn't mean a full team didn't get hit. It was deep. at least 8 patrollers were there within ten minutes but I left after that, with no gear with me i couldn't help, and they still hadn't found anyone.

Hope these first reports of five buried with one fatality are wrong.

    Alta 2 Slide

I witnessed the Alta 2 slide from the lift. It appeared that a group of 3-4 skiers were in the process of descending Alta 2 one by one and when the final skier was a few turns into the run the snow released. The crown of the avalanche appeared to be 2-3 feet and I would guess that it ran on the November rain crust.

The skier was carried about 100 yards downhill and managed to avoid a number of trees during the slide. It appeared that he came to a rest buried up to his waist, but mostly on top of the pile. Alta 2 was well skied prior to the avalanche. I would guess that about 20+ people skied the chute prior to the skier who set off the slide.

Jesus. Hope things turn out as best they can considering the circumstances. Just goes to show, always make your own decision. Even inbounds.
