Had to wade through all that trauma park stuff (some shot in Park City), to get to the slide. Not sure how all the man made inbounds park tricks relate to riding "natural" backcountry? Lucky to be alive, very lucky. Looked like some folks by the lift were caught as well.
Wow. Looked like a pretty deep slab just from eyeballing the crownline in the video. Pretty obviously windloaded too. The signs are there. Shoot, you can see spindrift blowing off that ridge as he's dropping into that chute... may be a different direction though. I'd be interested to know what the bed surface was and the recent snow/wind history. Definitely a lucky kid, especially with those rocks that it looks like he was pulled in the vicinity of, if not over. Hope he's recovering all right.
Some nifty park footage too (not saying that avy footage was "nifty," but more interesting and scary). That little gap-to-glacial erratic boulder was pretty sweet.
lucky indeed
Here my blog post, taken from the initial accident report.

And subsuquent post ofter being contacted by the Sales and Marketing Director of the camp the victim was attending.

J,
Solid post, and thanks for the background. I thought there must have been some serious wet snow and/or windloading to produce such a cohesive slab like that. At least it seemed pretty hard when it sheered from what I could see in the video.
Edit to add: I'm still a relative novice in terms of avy knowledge, just throwing stuff out there.
That did not look fun
It's always spooky when the second person triggers it.
that is some scary shit for sure. I was hiking off that same lift, albeit not with those surface conditions.
WTF that was fucking gnarly. How the fuck did he survive?
Wow.
One of the biggest rider triggered slides ever captured I would think.
Lucky, lucky kid.
Lucky dude there, would have not liked to be in that lift line with that beast bearing down on me.
Wait, What?
Friends of Berthoud Pass

holy fuck that made me grimmace just watching...
the avvy gain momentum super fast and looked as if it took the kid over some gnarly exposure. lucky kid...
If Randall and his parents are trying to educate people, then lose the image of him wearing a transceiver on the outermost layer of his clothing.
Yes I know he's building a kicker and is not wearing the jacket he would if he was riding, but as evidenced from the video footage 'innocent bystanders' can get caught up in an incident as easily as the person who triggered the slide.
Obvious loading...
It broke well above him and fairly far below him. He was traversing at the time. He had no chance of escape.
Lucky guy!

First off, if "Randall and his parents wanted us to post this video in the hopes that it would help to educate riders on the dangers of avalanches" why show 2:15 of park riding???? their is nothing educational about this video, Only that shit happens.
The kid was lucky and I agree with UtahGary 100% "that It's always spooky when the second person triggers it."
From talking to the people who were there that day the kid did nothing wrong. Just another case of wrong place wrong time.
Glad you are still with us Dude and a big hand to the guys who were jonny on the spot and got him out of there!! Good Work Guys!! heads up out there...
SASS statement: "the victim was found alive and with only minor injuries to the knee"
Rome site: "Randall suffered a fractured patella and fibula, along with a significant contusion to his hip."
If fractured patella and fibula are "minor" injuries for SASS, people should stay the hell away from them. From direct personal experience watching SASSers in the lift lines at Catedral two years ago, some of the campers are A-grade assholes too, who apparently think they are gods gift to the snowriding world. Squirrel and Figure11 know what I'm talking about on that one. We watched some early-20s "hard core I'm sponsored and you're not" snowboarder throw an actual temper tantrum because the lifts/lines weren't moving to his satisfaction, at which point he began to shove his way through the crowd, BACKED by the rest of the SASS gang.
So ELA, my memory is a bit rusty, this is the little bowl above where the Princesa III lift drops you? You get off the lift, facing the bowl above you, turn left and traverse towards Laguna from here? And the slope that went is above and just to the lookers right in the bowl as you come off the lift facing into the flats? Interesting, it never looked that big to me before. Edit: ah, looked at a trail map, looks like some things have changed, but yes, I have the right place in mind. Interesting!
