    Looking for a Ski--Newb P'ownage

Thought all the experts here would love a chance to stomp a newb, get some major p'wnage....flame away

I'm a new to the forum, but after browsing around, here goes nothing

    i'm 5'8 and a half, 5'9 on my best days, 175.

I have a volkl bridge with solly z12ti. I had these as a quiver, but now I'm moving out to COlorado in August and will be skiing full time in the rockies.

i spend most time at vail. under lift lines, blue sky, back bowls on pow days. like to huck, but not more than 15 ft, just haven't lost total regard for my life just yet.

looking for something 110+ to be my pow ski. I don't want to lose the use of my bridge because I love the sh*t out of it. It really is a great quiver....its a 177, so I def ski short, but would be open to skiing a something longer (18x something).....suggestions....i spend a fair bit of time in tree runs as well

i know this is all so vague, searched around a bit..currently looking into the new JJs from Armada (115mm) atomic thugs, katanas from volkl, uh derrrr brain fart, anyway rock on, flame on

There's this awesome new ski for 08/09. It is totally gonna rule the category of ski that you're looking for. It's called the Search Functionjong. You should look it up.

Here's a vote for the Katana. One thing to consider though... although the Bridge is a fun ski, you'll probably find that you don't use it as much as your new wide skis. The Katanas great on chop and pow days, but not when it gets firmer. If you got something like the Gotama it'll rock on pow days and handles the firm well too.

Yeah I considered that, but I like the idea of having multiple skis, the bridge for firm days (2-3 days after a dump) and a wide ski for the first couple days after a dump

i have searched, and found a ton of different opinions and skis, so many so, that a specific post I felt like would narrow the crap from the good...

how do people feel about the JJ- its going to have the five dimension profile that the ARG has just narrower, but still pretty wide at 115 underfoot center

people on this forum rave about the ARG, the only set back of the JJ (besides ones that could be mentioned below) is that its a brand new ski, and it will cost $$$$

itd be nice to find an 08 or even 07 left over on the cheap....again 110-120mm

edit the bro 179 fat looks sick, nice 114 underfoot, which flex is preferred by most people, any way to get it on the cheap, 679....i can get a pair of 07 thugs for 449.00

    adendum:

I kind of want to try a reverse camber (rockered) ski .

    sounds like too much fun.

    that would narrow my search

it is a good pic, less the 6 pairs of markers ;-)

another vote for the BRO fat, I loved em. I skied a pair with a soft+ flex (a little stiffer than normal soft) and had an orgasm. I cant wait to try the 186 rockered bros (brockers)

Where can all these skis be got cheap....I mean besides the obvious looking around the stores and net for sales....I mean it seems like everyone here has a whole bunch of skis, where do you all get that $$$, i can only dream

i guess here are some modified factors that i want

110-120 mm waist, rockered, fairly turny-or at least something that will be turny enough in tight glade runs

stiffness, as I said I'm a newb so even though I feel like I ski a fair amount, I can't say I know the difference between how a stiff ski will feel, vs a soft ski, and which of the two I'll be more at home for....at least with this wide ski, I only need something that will be stable enough to transport me over to the pow given that there might be some crud or hardpack on the way...

    im rambling now....anyway,

    p'wn/flame on

    edit

since i can't stop salivating over skis, heres an up to date list of some of the ones im considering

    Bro FAT 179
*Armada (08-09) JJ --- what size will this be in....i ve seen 178 and 188 but also seen 185...
    Atomic Thug - 181
    *Volkl Katana -183
    Scratch Steez - 186
    Rossi s7 --- what sizes
Black Diam megawatt 178 or 188
    *4frnt EHP 186
i dunno, that was a breif brainstorm, some of them aren't rockered, so someone narrow it down so i can start shopping for a deal. damn i want to ski now. I starred some of my favorites based on reader reviews

Keep your eyes peeled for posts this fall from ptex1 he's usually got some smokin' deals. Just don't screw him over and maybe since you're kinda new here get someone to vouch for you.

You need to step up into the 190 range. I think you need 197 Katana's or 194XXL's, I mean you're going to be skiing colorado and you don't want to get into a ski off with someone that has bigger skis than you. You'll look like a pussy.

If you want something pivoty for trees, stable at speed in pow, and you don't give a damn about hardpack performance, you need to go for a full-on reverse-reverse ski. Just pick up a pair of used Spats or some ARGs or whatever.

that's what so appealing about the JJ, it seems to be just a slightly narrower, more manageable ARG, but its expensive as balls...

    newb alertt---what is reverse reverse,

i assume half of that is reverse camber -- aka rockered, what is the other part of reverse-reverse

reverse side cut, ie the ski is wider in the middle than the tips

it makes for some killer carving

A 179 Obsethed might work for you. Not many people have skied it yet, but it fits your description and shouldn't be all that expensive if you're patient.

I ski the 179 Fat BRO in a stiff flex. I have yet to find the speed limit and don't think I'm man enough to ever do so. They charge through everything. When you get tired of making turns through ski'd out refrozen mank littered with death cookies you just point em and suddenly you feel like you're on a groomer. Absolutely no tip deflection at all. They suck in moguls though cause they are so fat your tips keep trying to go up the side of the bumps. Just point them there as well. Most fun I have ever had on a ski.

Typically, "rockered" is used to refer to tip only, while "reverse camber" refers to the entire ski.

Reverse camber skis include the Spatula, ARG, Praxis, and I think the Pontoon qualifies as well.

My short-list of 110 - 115 skis to try (I have not skied any of these yet, but they are on my list):

    Fatypus D-Sender
Icelantic Shaman and Nomad (they now come in 180 length)
    Prior Overlord
Moment Ruby (I have skied the 180, but am more intrigued by the 188)
    Faction 3.Zero
    Nordica Blower
    Bro Fat
Lib-Tech Powder (I own their Freeride model and it's killer, so can only imagine their Pow is just as solid)

Both Fatypus and Icelantic are based in Colo, so you should hit them up in regards to demos.

Moments and Bros can be found to demo via MarshalOlsen.

    PS
after 2 seasons of having multiple skis I've discovered that I only really need 2. Last season out of 60 days I found myself on either my Lib Tech Freerides or my Spatulas. Everything else pretty much got retired (though I'm keeping my King Salmons).

Basically, i think you can get by with an everyday ski in the 95-100 range and an pow ski in the 125+ range. if you wanna fill in the gap with something in the 110-115 range, that's cool (I'm considering that, but know down deep that i don't need it).
