TR - Mammoth Mcgee Mega

When:
jan 15, 2008 - mammoth mountain, hemlock
jan 16, 2008 - mammoth mountain, oh shit ridge X2
january 23 (hopefully), 2008 - mcGee mountain

just got back in town so I'll get to the editing. you've heard who won the quest. but it's just the beginning.

EDIT
so here's what we have up so far
video from the top of oh shit ridge (and some from below, too). Video also includes the awards ceremony. There's three versions available; a 700 kbps, a 1400 kbps, and a 550 Mb version. sorry, no youtube version. you can open a version, pause it, and come back later if you have a slow connection.

an image viewer with more pics from mark as well as others. If you have rider's name, just post them here with the picture number and i'll put it on there.

an interactive picture map of mount mcgee from 1/15/08

thus starts the week long TR.

this old man and the ski production

is brought to you by

the perfect start to any tr

first i went here

then, Alkasquawlik did this kind of floaty spinny thing
quicktime - 17mb
better quality mpeg2 - 20mb
or youtube

in the meantime, photog Mark (mag to be named later) was on hand taking lots of these

we've got well over 500 hundred pics and several hours of footage to go through so this is just the teaser.

the first thing i'll be working on is an interactive photo layout of mcgee from below with the pics i took tuesday morning. the snow on the apron was bomber!

Looks like a fun trip, Can't wait to see more pics. Remarkable how much softer the snow looks down there compared to back up here!

i should note that i don't have the actual perimeter for the venue added on there. i'll try to get that. also. the far right hand shots through the pillars may, or may not be in view of the judges, depending on how far up the apron everything is set up. for most of the zoomed pics i had skinned up about 1000'. they were out of view there. the zoomed pic of the right side is from about 800' above the road.

Props too everyone involved in the event. Congrats to Cody on winning, hope you rip the piss out of the Bec de rosses, or whatever it's called a Verbier.

on with the TR

so, let's get to the tr part of this thing. as alluded to above, i prepared the bacon the night before since i would be leaving at 4 am. actually left the driveway in the trusty subaru at 4:24. it was just me. since they split the comp into 2 days, i only had the luxury of a photographer on wednesday.

arrived at mcgee mountain at sunrise

there's only room for about 3 cars, so arrive early

mcgee at sunrise

early light

tracks back down

click here for more pictures of mcgee mountain

on to mammoth and today's event.
this is where things got blurry. due to an insurance snafu, us media types were left at the bottom w/o tickets. i skinned up past chair 12 where patrol stopped me and told me I would have to accept a ride the rest of the way. when i arrived, it was already like this.

music was bumpin

i don't have any pics from the action at hemlock. i'll have video up a little later

since at that point, the wednesday event was supposed to happen at oh shit, and then top of the world, i went up to look around while others were inspecting the course.

meeting on top of the world

contestant checking out the takeoff on a mandatory 40 footer

and another look at top of the world from the top of 5. would have made a nice venue for a select few.

'oh shit'

'oh shit' ridge

due to the insurance/ticket snafu, i was able to stay here instead of in the cozy confines of my subaru. thanks!

i went and checked out the riders meeting at footloose tuesday night. it was here that the riders voted for two runs on oh shit instead of a second run on top of the world. i think the vote would have been much closer if the french delegation knew there was a vote going on. language barriers presented challenges on several occasions.

extreme groomers

while i waited for telexc to show, i went up to capture the course inspection

and did the same from below

i ran into steve klassen on the way up to film and asked about filming from the top. that was the best decision i made all week, and resulted in the only pics and video with good lighting. here are some event pics from the top of the ridge before i opted for the video camera approach

you can see telexc's setup in this shot

still got lots of video and better pics to come, plus next weeks event.

Awesome. Is the mandatory 40 footer Balls? Top of the world does look pretty bony and has a bouncy runout, but Oh Shit has those flat landings. Tough choice...

That would have been fun to watch.

Likewise. Sorry I had to bail so quick, but we'll have to make some turns next time.

Great photos. A friend and I want to come back down and watch/shoot the action on mcgee, but need some beta. Is there a definite schedule (dates/times) set yet? Are we going to be allowed to get near/on the venue to shoot?

I know I should be able to find all these answers elsewhere, but couldn't. Maybe if I could read French.

Great pics. I've been skiing Mammoth since I was a pup and even bummed there for a couple of years and I've never seen Oh Shit from the top.

It'll be interesting to see what happens given the forecast.

arrrrgh!! it's uploading, but for some reason only at 49 kbps. at that rate we're looking at over an hour (it's a 414 Mb quicktime file). it's still an early cut as for some reason the soundtrack is ending at a very different spot from the view in the editor. right now the soundtrack cuts out some of the awards for some reason.

out of curiosity, what audio settings do you video folk use when exporting to quicktime. i can't seem to get it. even what is supposed to be high quality stereo comes out sounding like over trebled mono.

edit- i'm now rendering an mpeg2, which i've always had better success with. it will be about 520 mb and should be of noticeably higher quality. it's also taking about 1/10th the time to render.

edit again - fuck quicktime. i just stopped the download after watching the mpeg2 version. it'll be available by sunrise and only 20% larger at 520 mb

edit 1 more time -
the video will be here after about 3:45 am pacific time.
