Unhappy east coast backcountry users beware!!!

the meeting at jay peak this evening , imho, was a complete disaster. the state is taking action with no room for compromise. big jay access is closed until further notice. it was not a disscussion as to what to do about access, merely an "informational" meeting to let backcountry skiers know what was going on. the fences were up before the meeting took place and the gate was guarded today at jay by two gmc volunteers. stay away from that area, is the position from the powers that be, we are being asked to come together and form a formal club of sorts, to speak on our behalf, with the other clubs and organizations in the development of a management plan for big jay and all other backcoutry skiing destinations on state land. which is in the process of being written up now. did anyone get that memo?

watch out stowe and smuggs, you guys are next on their radar, and they what you shut down as well.

A QUOTE FROM THE COMMISH, " ALL CUTTING MOST STOP NOW. IT CAN NO LONGER GO ON."

Stay out of the woods with a saw or else, was the tone of the meeting. all and all, no questions were answered, but many good points were made by the bc community. basically though, we are shit out of luck

Sounds like you have your work cut out up there.

I know very little about the issues.

However growing up in the Tahoe basin, a forrest that has been cleared and then replanted by man, then left unmanaged is a very bad thing.

The no saws EVER sounds like a common cry from the excessive.

    Good luck with that.

I am in favor of such actions, keeping skiers out of the woods. But I dont know if my NGO's had any influence on this. I will have to check. If we didnt have any influence on this I am dissappointed in my left coast activists.

The precendence has been set and it is good for my special interest groups. It sounds in VT its for the trees that need to be saved. Out west its the animals that need to be saved. Limiting human and motorized access is the goal of the radical environmentalist movement. Skiing is bad for the environment. Skiing should take place in bounds only at established ski hills. Skiers are generally lefties, so with your help and donations to environmental groups, my goals will be accomplished.

Thank you,for limiting your access for the animals. Or in this case trees which are almose extinct in Vermont , I hear from my left coast affiliates.
If you whisper very quietly the animals dont scurry.

    Backcountry cutters disperse

Imagine a sunny Saturdayin July[as this is one of three
state approved trail days]with a crew consisting of 87.4% intermediate resort skiers 12% environmental watchdogs .65% core BC skiers[You and 2 buds]and 4 forest and parks employees.
Todays task:a 63.6' wide by 2269.4' 20 degree "pitch. The site has been surveyed, evaluated.checked by Audubon employees for nesting sites, vernal pools rare plants etc.
After an 87 minute lecture You hike 1400' from the parking area to the future BC trail site. Now You see the tape delineating the area to be cut and the trees marked for todays trail maintenance."You call this BC" The State has tried the same thing with MTB and has ended up with a small amount of "refreshed" trails that are Tombstones of their former glory.

You're an idiot. There is no need to "keep skiers out of the woods". That's a little drastic. More like a lot drastic, actually. Go away JONG.

I've spent a lot of time in the VT woods and probably half of those trees need to be cut down or cut out. They are dead fall or dieing from ice storms or overgrowth. If a good fire ever did start it wouldn't stop until it hit Boston.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'.

I would like to see more managed programs like MRG volunteer trail work days. For you folks that want to do something about this or start a program at your own mountain, I recommend attending one of these.

    http://treeskier.com/mrg/index.html

    and

Sustainable Forest Management for Eastern Ski Areas

Besides the fact that all this work is done intelligently, I also think it's important to give those who are willing the opportunity to take part in this. Otherwise, you get dumb-ass "stealth" operations like up at Big Jay.

Yes. It is. There is no Back country in NE. Only icey hard groomers and wicked flat light. Tahoe is the sickness. SLC is pretty good too.

I'd be interested inhelping start an advocacy group on behalf of NE bc skiers. I have a lot of experience setting up these type of things and in grassroots organizing and management.

i'm also very interested in getting something like this organized. while we may not be able to ski big jay this season, we could possibly regain access next season if we worked with the land managers and came to a compromise.

EC Backcountry is just the stuff the Snowcat piles up at the sides of beginner trails. After all, the Bruce is just that thing on the side of the Green Circle Toll Road.

Haha - East Coast Backcountry... You guys are soooo right - only Icy Groomers. Spread the word.

Backcountry Skiers Alliance or something of that ilk would work.

    BSA's abound!

how about Save Our Backcountry, Vermont Upper/Lower Valley Alliance or Skiing Friends of the Backcountry?

The name will be funny no matter what, methinks.
