    MPC #60 Normal (12/23/2010 - 1/6/2011)

    The theme is Normal

    From wordnetweb.princeton.edu:

    Noun

    * S: (n) convention, normal, pattern, rule, formula (something regarded as a normative example)

    Adjective

    * S: (adj) normal (conforming with or constituting a norm or standard or level or type or social norm; not abnormal) "serve wine at normal room temperature"; "normal diplomatic relations"; "normal working hours"; "normal word order"; "normal curiosity"; "the normal course of events"
    * S: (adj) normal (in accordance with scientific laws)
    * S: (adj) normal (being approximately average or within certain limits in e.g. intelligence and development) "a perfectly normal child"; "of normal intelligence"; "the most normal person I've ever met"
    * S: (adj) normal (forming a right angle)

Here's a few of my thoughts:

I'm looking for some shots of something completely normal... but not.

Maybe it's in plain sight, but not seen. Maybe it's seen but not noticed. Maybe it's noticed but no one has yet stopped to really take a look...

Perhaps it's a scene of a normal day at work; or maybe a normal day at the mountain; maybe it's a normal object in a sea of normalcy that, for whatever reason, at that one moment is worthy of our attention.

Alternative interpretations may lean toward the side of mathematics where normal is one of the most abused words in the field. I think that might be harder though. For folks looking to go that way, here's one idea: A "normal angle" is a 90 degree angle. Maybe defer to the previous paragraph now?

I think this should be a pretty fun theme. I'm hoping to be surprised as you push beyond my initial thoughts here. Have fun!

    RULES:
    1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.
    2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.
    3. The contest moderator will choose 5 photos to be voted on.

    6. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.
    7. The winner has 3 days to start a new contest or 2nd place becomes the new winner.

I'll give it a shot - something normal seen every day, the sun. Shot with my iphone through a pair of sunglasses while bored driving through Indiana. The first one accidentally had the flash on, but I liked the way it came out.

I like #2 a lot. Reminds me of a holga shot or something.

This one requires some back story. I lived in the Northwest for 10 years, Bellingham pictured here for 4. Went to grad school at WWU(seen on the hill in the picture)--- in math kidwoo! Anyway, loved the area, hated the weather. It mentally took a toll on me and put me in a bad place... Normal weather was overcast and rainy. Finally moved away from there and couldn't be happier, parents live here now so I visit on the Holidays.

#1: This has become a very normal site from my home office balcony each morning for the last few days.

#2: Snow has definitely become the norm this winter. Zwinger Palace in Dresden on Christmas morning.

I'll save #3 for something from Amsterdam. It will probably be a picture of me choking down yet another bong hit on day 5 of our trip

Shot with a normal lens on a normal day. I took a piss here and it felt a completely normal thing to do.

judging from the timestamp, in a less than understandable (drunk) sort of way I wanted to communicate that while your other stuff is good, I liked this one.

I know you've gotten some slack for a lot of tahoe/donner shots but I did like your execution and composition with a slightly different FOV (i.e. rocks and lakes like you always say).

I'm not really sure what I meant by honest, but que sera sera...

Gotcha. Well, people can give me all the slack they want for shooting "rocks and lakes" but I live in Tahoe so....I either shoot rocks/lakes/pine trees or weddings/people/sports in rocks lakes and pine trees....

My parents retired last year in South Carolina, and this type of sunset is something my dad sees virtually every night, whether it's out on his boat or by a 5-min bike ride from the house. I'm envious that something this beautiful is normal to him.

Stonehenge. Some would say an abnormal structure. But many of the stones are normal to each other!

(used a completely uncalibrated monitor on this one, no idea how the colors will look to everyone else)
