What is the collective's take on the pass vs. 50 tomorrow morning for SF to KW? High chance of pass closure or way too early to tell?
Too early to tell. I'd plan on 50 and go from there. With the high winds a closure of the spur is certainly possible but a one day storm event with calm weather might allow caltrans to keep it open. If it were going to be a two or three day storm then a closure is more likely.
I'm headed back out from the 5th to the 7th...what's been good lately? Of course one of those days will be spent at Squaw but thinking backcountry for the other two

Yeah it is. 5 years ago a jong buddy of mine took that right. I was staring at a ski area boundary sign as he did it. I followed him knowing that we were screwed. 2-3 hrs later, with no backcountry setup, we were at the dam at Caples. I got to the road first and hitched a ride back to KW to get my car and left his dumb ass on the side of the road until I got back. Worst day ever.
Today was a total washout.
Got to AM around 10 only to watch them shut down Summit.
As we rode up Subway they shut down Roundhouse.
By the time we got off the chair there was a queue of about 200 people at Hot Wheels.
We decided to ski back to the car and head to HW. On the way back to the car we decided that HW would be worse (i.e. wetter) so we opted for NS. Got to NS around 11. Parked by Home Run. Talked to some OG racers who had just quit for the day and they basically said it was crappy, slushy, and not worth the effort. To drive their opinion home it began to rain while we were putting on our boots, which drove the nail in the coffin for us. Scrapped the day and headed back to the cabin where it has now been raining on/off for a few hours.

I'm really starting to question how good of an idea it is to pack up and leave utah for a week of skiing in tahoe. Rain and warm temps is not very exciting.
You know the deal dfinn, you used to live here. It's raining at lake level and you can see the forcasts. Might end a little colder and be really good.........or might be the reason you moved to utah
East winds on sunday but another front coming in on tuesday.
You guys hurtin out there?
I will say though.....this says make the drive to me.
kirkwood was surprisingly good today. 6 was on wind hold all morning, so we froze our butts on 10 all day. they did have 6 going when we left and we got one run there before going. it was snowing top to bottom all day and even all the way back until meyers, where it's a mix.
here's a POV from wednesday at the wood, and then yesterday at kirkwood and Carson Pass.
Qualifying for the NF Masters at KW today was cancelled after all the women had run and 1/3 of the men had gone, so finals will be moved back to Sunday.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. If possible, as you gain knowledge, would you mind updating your blog with extra information? It is extremely useful for me.
No, not really. We got a foot plus this week. I was out on the new sled Thursday before work and it was over the hood. I guess this trip is more about hanging out with friends from home than skiing but it would be really nice if the skiing didn't suck. I'm hoping your map comes true.
Sorry to "bump" my post, but hoping for some more responses. What do you guys think the call is on 50->pass vs. the spur for SF->KW tomorrow morning?
from the looks of things now, i would simply make your decision tomorrow based on what's open then. it looks as though there is one big band of precip headed our way, and it is splitting as we speak. i would think the spur would be faster and if it's open when you leave, it 'should' remain open. check the radar and make sure there's nothing major heading towards the area when you leave.
What is the collective's take on the spur vs. 50 tomorrow morning for SF to KW? High chance of spur closure or way too early to tell?
Fought call. The road closed withthe last storm. Check before you leave. Check radar. If it is still dmpng n the early morning, I would take 50. It is realy only about 30 minutes more.
ottime - I should be up Saturday. Snowranger you riding with the grom all day or are you dropping her off for training? frush? LSL? others?
I'm out for Saturday ... gonna see Mark Kozelek in the city and he only plays once every other year. Touring somewhere on Sunday, Tallac, Jakes or Rose depending on road/snow conditions. Give a ring if you want to photoslut.
