TR: Istanbul, Venice, Florence and Bologna

Just returned from a two week sojourn in Europe. The jetlag is kicking me in the nuts, so I will try to be a coherent as possible.

First we flew from Denver to Istanbul and stayed at the Four Seasons Sultanahmet (the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at)

We saw the sights, such as the Blue Mosque

Our guide, Jem, however, knew of a way to see Istanbul from lesser known

We then went to the Basillica Cistern, which used to be the water supply for old Constantinople

We ate lots of baclava (with heavy spreadable cream--nom nom)

    Then saw Ayasofya

We made a trip to the Topkapi Palace

    Istanbul is beautiful

Then we made a trip to both the Grand Bazaar and the Egyptian Spice Bazaar, which were amazing...

We walked across the Blue Bridge...

    Venice pt. 2

We hoped a flight from Istanbul to Venice with a VERY brief stopover in Vienna.

After a water taxi ride to our hotel and quick stroll down the byzantine streets of Venice, St. Mark's greeted us...

Then we strolled around the Doge's Palace

And looked at the beautiful Grand Canal and gondolas

    Venice + sunset = romance

    The Ronteles in Murano

On the vaparetto ride back from Murano (St. Mark's square)

St. Mark's at night is one of the most romantic places I've ever been. The lights, the music, it really is special

    Next, we went to Firenze!

    Florence and Bologna, pt. 3

    Hercules, Hercules!

    Palazzo Vecchio

    The Duomo

The Jewish Synagogue in Firenze (amazing!)

Michelangelo's tomb in the Santa Croce

Exterior of the Santa Croce w/ the Ronteles

We had bisteca Fiorentina in the old cellar of the Antinori family winery

The next day, we left the environs of Florence for the Tuscan countryside. The view of Florence from the Pizzale Michelangelo

    Tuscany = $$$$

This is where Leonardo purportedly painted the Mona Lisa

On the border between the provinces of Florence and Siena

    Siena

We flew out of Bologna, but had an awesome day strolling around this midevil gem

    Fin.

Ha, I didn't even notice until you mentioned it. Looks like a great trip, my wife's been after me to go to Turkey for years (she lived there as a teenager). Plus great pics from Italy (and the Mrs. is certainly a keeper, congrats).

It seems a bit odd that in the Egyptian spice market in Turkey all the signs are in English - just an observation.

Four Seasons?!.... Way too classy for TGR. Please delete and repost in Alpine Zone. Thank you.

Unless, of course, you're sharing some more honeymoon pics...

Nice trip. I love Italy, but have yet to see Turkey. How was that Bisteca Fiorentina? I was amazed how good their beef was!

Right on. Congrats on getting hitched.

Istanbul rocks. Would really like to get back out there some day and explore more of Turkey.

Nice TR. Venice is great, isn't it? Discover any new foods?

    Congrats on getting married, too.

Heh. I figured it was a nice and convenient way to carry my camera, guidebooks and stand out like a total gaper tourist.

Sure. In Sultanahmet district of Istanbul. Get on a bus and head a few hours East and haggle for rugs. Good grief. Thankfully money talks and breaks down any language barrier. I recall paying $15 a day for a driver/car (all day local tours in southern interior Turkey) and they thought I overpaid. Great trip, great country. Instanbul is like NYC, but with history and culture.
