    Canyons Inbounds Slide

nothing official yet, red pine chute slid, 2 lifeflights on flats by the top of the gondola. Anyone have any other info? mc_roon and I didn't want to bother patrol and ask the same questions they have been getting all day.

another heli still flying around the valley; maybe getting DV avy dogs? Heard 3 recovered so far, all complete burials.

it slid around 11:30-11:45, so serious vibes are needed for anyone still under the snow.

two young bucks from what i heard. the 11 year old may not make it. They were working on him for quite sometime at the foot of the heli. The other was lifted by life flight about an hour ago.

East-North East aspect that ripped out of bounds and came in-bounds. Tore out on one of the few pockets of October facets.

Pretty shitty Xmas gift huh? The family was at the bottom in a somber mood of course. No gear whatsoever. But that is the norm at the Canyons.

Read SHERIFF down the tail. You are talking about the maroon/brown colored one?

Why do you need avy gear if you're inbounds?

Did the out of bounds pocket rip naturally, or skier triggered?

Possibly if there is an avalanche, and you are in it, or near it?

There have been many inbounds avies that have killed people over the years...

    From the Park Record website:

    BREAKING NEWS:
Avalanche kills at least one: An avalanche killed at least one person in the vicinity of The Canyons, Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds said. The slide occurred midday Sunday, and Edmunds was unsure whether others were trapped. It was first reported that rescuers had performed CPR on two victims, but their conditions were not immediately available. The sheriff indicated at about 12:15 p.m. Search and Rescue crews were continuing to look for more victims. The location of the avalanche was not immediately known, but a helicopter was heard near Square Top, an area that is outside The Canyons but easily accessible from the resort. A couple waiting to get on the Ninety-Nine-90 Express lift told The Park Record the avalanche appeared to have occured near the Red Pine Chutes area, an expert run.

Wow, just got home a bit ago from the Canyons. Skied some inbounds shots North of 9990 and saw a huge avy that ski patrol had triggered with explosives around 3 ft deep and 200 ft wide maybe more. Winds seemed to be gusting really hard at the ridgeline so Mtnbirder and I decided to stay inbounds for the day. When we were leaving we heard some talk about a burial, sad to hear it was true. +++Vibes to the family and victim

OMG! Vibes to the families. Today, I took my first day off in a long time. Yesterday, the 9s got skied out quickly. Most of the resort seemed choppy. There were high winds today. With the impending storm, I thought that it was a good day to rest my bones. I'm glad I did.
This happens frequently at The Can. Maybe, it's because the people skiing these areas are vacationers, or weekend warriors. (Unlike the majority of the BCC/LCC skiers). Does anyone know whether they are locals?
Not to preach, but this is the perfect sad example why no one (no matter how experienced) should ski Square, Dutches and arguably any of the north facing aspect of the 9s w/out at least a beacon, shovel, probe AND partner. There are plenty of OoB goods here, and many ski them alone. ...It's not a good idea.

So was the family out of bounds when the slide occurred?

Several inbound slides so far this year. Two at Mammoth already one caught, but no injuries. Both on well controlled terrain, that gets skied a lot. Skiing with beacon is a good idea, but not practical for the vast majority of resort skiers. This is where Recco reflectors would be useful, not to start that whole argument again.

Vibes to victims and their families.

From what I've heard, the slide occurred right at the rope line near Charlie Brown and Red Pine Chutes. Unsure, whether it family was beyond the rope.
I did hear that the 11 year old was resuscitated, and the father passed.

None of the patrollers were fired. The despute was settled, and the same experienced patrollers who worked there last year are there now.

Bud Green, your statement is bullshit!

    shit....RIP.

Judging by the probe line (or at least what looked like a probe line from tombstone), the burials were inbounds, though I cannot say if the slide started inbounds (red pine chute) or from OB (charlie brown)

6 of us skied the shoulder between hanging wall and voodoo cliffs at around 11am today, pretty heavy ski cuts and a quick pit, slope was bomber, nothing moved an inch. I wish we had dropped within sight of red pine and northside 9, we probably would have seen it go and been some of the first on the scene.

Bud Green, you obviously have no idea what you are talking about

As a father of 2 boys I am saddened by this to the core. The idea of that dad not being around to see his kids grow up really really hurts.

    RIP

Major congratulations to SAR/Patrol or whomever saved the kid

I hadn't heard about the settlement either , but I hadn't been paying attention.

Vibes to all, family patrol and other SAR, the Canyons has alot of back country, slack country access. It is best to be prepared for self rescue, the folks who may well save you are the folks in your own party.

Well I just got back from the press conf. @ the Summit Co. Sheriffs Office. They didn't really have much as far as details were concerned, they pretty much told us:

A slide was triggered but they didn't say how it was caused. They didn't tell us whether it was in or out of bounds but they said it was in the Red Pine area. They said it was a male 25-30 yr old who was buried and was the fatality and an adolencent male who was found buried and flown to a SLC hospital but they didn't state a condition. They also didn't release any info concerning beacon's etc. They said there were several witnesses that saw it happen and told patrol where to look. When I went up to the resort to get some generic cover video I ran into the photog from the Record who told me it looked like it was inbounds but she wasn't completely sure.

That's all I got, not really anything different from what others have mentioned but it's a horrible outcome for what should have been a fun day of skiing.

    +++vibes+++ to the family.

I stand corrected. I paraphrased what I read in the City Weakly. I can't believe I was misled by the media.......again!
