    cheap condos/hotel at jay peak

im planning a trip with some buddies of mine to go up to jay peak. anyone know of any cheap places we can stay either slope side or a few miles away. I'd prefer a condo type place with a kitchen so we can cook while we're up there. if you have any ideas or know of anywhere lemme kno. thanks

The hotel jay is right in the "village" no cooking facilities, but pretty cheap for being steps away from the tram.

They have condos, which have kitchens obviously, but I have no idea where to find information about them...I would think maybe, just maybe their website would be a good place to start.

Or maybe something in the sprawling metropolis of Jay, VT

I am not local i live in NJ but i am also going up around christmas to Jay. hotel jay is cheap has a restaurant and is about 100 feet away from the the tram entrance. last year i went up twice first i stayed in one of the slopside condos, second time stayed in hotel jay. if u have 3-5 guys and are looking for a place with a kitchen i would highly suggest a slopeside condo. with that amount of people they can be very affordable and have all the ammenities that u need. if it snows u will need a good car to get up the hill to the condo, depending on whether or not they plowed it or not and how high up on the slope your condo is. also go into town before hand and buy groceries, beer on other basic necessities beause I am not sure if there is a shop like that on the mountain. hotel jay has evrything that u need but if u want to cook condo is the way to go. if u are in college i think they discount it even more. will try to reply here later with exact costs for condo at that time since i am going to be staying in one this december.

Dude, Grampa Grunts. Don't look anywhere else unless Grampa Grunts is booked. It is less than 30 bucks a night and comes with a kickass cook to order breakfast. Not to mention the anything goes BYOB lounge in the basement. It is right in Montgomery Center, probably 15 minutes from the base.

Edit: I guess the price went up since I was there last. 35 bucks a night with breakfast.
Just ski down there and jump of a somethin' fer cryin' out loud!

I'd never heard of that place, but that actually looks pretty sweet. Maybe I'll spend a night up there this season.

I always end up staying in newport - about a 30 minute drive but it's right off the highway. The newport city motel has been great and even in a pinch the super8 is ok too. AAA rated and discounted (if you have triple A), cheap clean rooms and a few places to get some food/beers in town.

last time at granpa grunts we ran into this group of canadian college kids, some chill, some not so chill. when we showed up we noticed someone had built a ramp over the grandpa grunts sign (sign = ~7 feet high). SO anyways its about 11 and were good and drunk. all night there has been this particularly obnoxious Canadian carrying around an empty Heineken draft keg. the kid is wearing a bandanna, and is still all decked out in his snowboard gear. he has that look on his face like he's waiting for someone to question his apparelell so he can tell them how rad he is.

eventually extreme boarder gets all fired up and annouces that he's going to jump the grandpa grunts sign. our crew gets very excited. drunk canadian gaper + poorly contructed jump + flat landing = carnage right? the anticipation was overwhelming and we all struggled real hard to keep straight faces and not make comments about how dumb we thought canadians were. after a speed check he gets set, and gets towed into the jump...

he has waaaaay too much speed. we get exciteder. he hits the jump and it launches him into the backseat, he flies with his body parallel to the ground (toes facing the sky, back facing the ground) for about 15 feet reaching a pinnacle height of about 10 feet. flailing the whole way, he lands directly on his ass/back in about a foot of powder. he is ok. upon further inspection we discover that his right thigh landed about a foot and a half away from the top of a sturdy 6" wide wooden fence support that is now poking through the landing zone. if he had actually landed on it he woudl have decimated himself and been hospitalized and thats never that funny, but coming so close to destroying himself was amazing, and one of the funniest dumbest things i've ever seen. i haven't laughed that hard in a while. i'm pretty sure he didn't eve notice the pylon, because he got right up and did it again. so effing extreme he is.

moral of the story: go to grandpa grunts.

Grampa Grunts is da shit. Make sure you get one of the honeymoon rooms with a waterbed and a mirror on the ceiling if you are going with anyone special

Another people-meeting-at-Grunts story: If any of you remember, about three or four seasons ago there were a bunch of young guys that got stuck out overnight in some huge drainage on the wrong side of Jay. The biggest problem was that it was twenty below (literally) and no one thought they would survive. The rescue/recovery crew that went out in the morning actually found them alive and mostly ok, and they were successfully taken out on snowmobiles.

So my college group was partying at Grunts one night and some dudes drop in who weren't actually staying there. They friendly enough and looking to do some boozing. Essentially our big group had reserved Grampa's and forced them to find a new place for their annual trip. Turns out, they were the same ones who got stuck in the woods the year before. The firsthand account their night out was pretty wild; how one of them luckily/stonedly had a lighter, one dude burned his gloves trying to heat his hands, and how they basically all thought they were gonna die. Pretty intense. And they keep coming back to Jay and skiing the woods. They're maybe not the brightest mountain navigators, but the survival story is pretty impressive.

So.... Go to Grunts. Also because there's a killer dive bar with karaoke right around the corner.

Dude, I met those guys there too. I think it was 4 years ago this winter. The last day I was there there was about 8-10 inches new on the ground.

Edit: Do you remember seeing the missing guys' boot by the fire?

I have always had good luck at Jay Valley Inn, I think that is it, always a good meal. I'll have to check out Grandpa Grunts this year, hopefully i can witness some sick bird frogs getting ill with it.

The place I stayed at last season when I went up was the Irish Rose (google the website). It was cheap and pretty good...but bizarre. Um, I can't really explain it other than to say it's got a lot of porcelain dolls and decorative weirdness going on. The inn owners are very nice and kinda quirky (hee! you'll see what I mean).

As for cooking...you'll be too tired from skiing in the powdery trees (hopefully). There are a few decent and relatively cheap places to eat so don't sweat it. Or order an extra poutine w/ lunch and you won't be hungry for dinner.

Anyway, for the price I'd recommend this Irish Rose Inn. Clean, cheap, good food (breakfast included). They throw in a ticket discount too. And it's minutes from the mtn.

I too have stayed at the Coach House. It is right across the street (sort of) from Grampa Grunts. This would be your second choice for cheap lodging.

Snowshoe is your typical hick/ski bum town pub. Plus with $2 PBR tallboys your set for the night. Plus Sylvesters (the closest groceries to jay) is right around the corner and has everything you'll ever need (including full beer/liquor store)

If Grunts is full, check out Snow Shoe Lodge & Pub. The bar is on the first floor and the rooms are upstairs. The bar draws a great, local Montgomery Center crowd - a local guy once took off his fake leg and started smacking it against the bar as he was telling me the story of how he was run over by his own snowmobile (resulting in said fake leg). You just don't find that at a B & B.
