    TR - Ski Lake, 8/2/10

    Date: August 2, 2010
    Place: Ski Lake
    Skiers: dookey67, Vets
Objective: To find a new patch to practice our soft-serve 8s on.

On the hike up we saw a lot of interesting plants with way cool alien looking pods:

Does anyone know what these are called?

    Vets:

    dookey67:

Vets working on the soft-serve 8s:

Lhasa Pows, King Salmons, and Soft-Serve 8s:

    Another view of soft-serve 8s:

I think that we will need some more practice before we can compete with the likes of T.J. Burke and Dexter Rutecki.

    Vets:

    dookey67 straitlines "the gnar":

and survives it to make some more turns:

    Ski Lake patches:

Purple arrow - start of our first run.
Green arrow - start of our second run.
Blue arrow - start of our third run.

It was fun to ski some new lines. I'd like to return here earlier next year.

You must be too young to have seen Invasion of the Body Snatchers? There were pods involved...

I forgot to add the .
I am too young for the original, but old enough for the remake.
Now I need to add both to my Netflix queue.

Yeah, that plant is a member of the "milkvetch" genus, but it is hard to tell exactly which species of the genus is in that photo. There are like 2000 types of milkvetchs out there, and sometimes you need a small magnifying glass to see the difference between two. Based on these photos, it looks like a Lavin's milkvetch (Astragalus oophorus var. lavinii), which has those pods as more swollen than other similar milkvetch species. There a quite a few other milkvetchs that look almost exactly like Lavin's though. For common identification purposes, referring to it as a milkvetch is probably good enough. If it is a Lavin's milkvetch, thats cool because Lavin's is a USFS sensitive species. When I'm not snowboarding fulltime, I work as a biologist on the north shore. I enjoy riding in winter so much more because I don't have to see all these plants and think about them hehe. Good thing is, when you venture off the trail and some annoying tourist says "hey, you're killing plants", I can respond with "its okay, I'm a scientist", which really gets you out of trouble, even when you're carrying a board and six-pack.

Thanks for the information on the milkvetch.
It took a real scientist to come up with the winning answer.

Ah, yes. I thought maybe my sarcasm meter was off yesterday. I too only saw the remake. I remember being like 12 and the scene that picture is from freaked me out!

Thanks. I'm not much of a talker, but I do come on here a lot in spring/summer to find the best spots to ride on my precious two days off. Winter I work 4 days per week and stick to Donner Pass and Rose Wilderness. Donner Pass is pretty much the shit, and I rode there until early July, until rock climbers took over.

Since then I've been riding mostly at the 4th day of the 7th month chutes, but I haven't rode there since 7/17, and it was getting pretty thin then. I built so many kickers below the cliff face down there that my back felt like hell and I was afraid it'd still ache come Nov., but a little PBR fixed all. Mistake made on 7/17 was bring my fiance with; she hates going anywhere that doesn't have chairs or didn't host the Olympics. After sitting in a deep suncup for 2 hours watching me do like eleventy thousand 50 foot runs off a little kicker, she asked that I do "summer" stuff until late Oct., when Mt. Rose usually gets enough cover to destroy only one or two boards a week. But, she's off with her friends to look at wedding spots tomorrow, so I'm thinking of visiting a junkyard looking place to shred that, to be precise is south of Canada, North of Mexico, and east of the Pac-O. Her friend is driving them, so I might even take her car tomorrow!

    Top of chute on 7/10

Gents. You guys are getting on it. I keep think of calling you up to join, and the south swells keep rolling in. Speaking of which, I really need to get back out there.

Nice call on the Milk Vetch Mr. PBR. I saw that same thing on PCT near Tinkers Knob and wondered as well.

Vets and Dook - way to get after it. I am looking to track down some August turns on Mount Lola tomorrow. Hope I can post a trip report....nice work on your part.
