Top 10 reasons not go to Moab with a bunch of Aggro Roadies. A TR of sorts

Before I get into this, let me first state that I am probably one of the aforementioned roadies, but I feel like I've seen the light at least a little bit with regards to mountain biking, especially in Moab. In any case, starting with #10.

    10. The discussion about which rides to do leads to the comment, "I would rather ride technical uphills than technical descents."

    9. The key ride for the weekend is one that they coined "The Powerbar," which consists of linking four rides together for a 4 or 5 hour fitness ride.

    8. One of those rides consists of Poison Spider, which is quite possibly the worst trail for a mountain bike in the world, unless you like sand.

    7. When mentioning that I wouldn't ride the powerbar for various reasons, mostly because I would rather have fun than suffer, and secondly because I hate the sand on Poison Spider, I am told I must not know how to ride sand, which may or may not be true, but is entirely beside the point.

    6. Everything, and by that I mean EVERYTHING, turns into a competition, which makes the whole Moab experience kind of lame.

    5. Said competition turns to extreme drunkenness and leads one individual to become quite aggressive nearing the point of violence.

    4. When discussing Porcupine, whether to ride Hazzard, UPS, LPS or whatever we can, this comment is heard, "I did that once and I was so disappointed. $15 for a shuttle and the terrain isn't even that good."

    3. The primary conversation of the weekend revolves around the upcoming race season, and what riders have switched to which teams.

    2. One of the favorite rides of the weekend for many was called "Flat Pass." It's exactly like it sounds. I was told it was a lot like porcupine, which is true....except Porcupine is not flat.

And the number one reason to not go to Moab with a bunch of incredibly intense roadies is:

    1. Somehow, some way....you'll end up going to Moab and not riding Porcupine.

The conclusion, be very selective about who you go to Moab with. In the end, it was still a fun trip, but my future Moab crew will be friends from this board, or friends I've met through friends on this board.

Good to hear you still 'somewhat' have your head straight on your shoulders phil

-poison spider is t3h biggest suck ever. I loathe that trail.

-flat pass can actually be pretty fun, if you shuttle it. I assume you did the loop? echh...

roadies are assholes, it really is that simple.

    BORING assholes.

    BORING, ANNOYING assholes.

although I kinda like their idea of 4 rides looped for a 5 hour biggie, that sounds like something I'd enjoy WITH A DIFFERENT GROUP!

So is this the beginning to a long roadie bashing thread? I'm not saying it's a bad idea or anything, just want to dbl check before diving in

Out of curiosity what were the other trails of the power bar? Just got back from Moab and we ran out of time before hitting the poison spider trail; looks like we prioritized right.

The king daddy is the Centurion.

ride starts in town of moab
    Trail Description:
links Amassa back, Moab rim, Flat pass, Porcupine rim, gold bar rim, to the final portal trail descent. The trail crosses moab a few times. Annual group ride some full moon in Autumn.
    Trail Length:
    100 miles

I can't remember the other trails within powerbar, just that poison spider and goldbar are two of the four. I like neither, but poison spider is likely the worst trail in Moab to ride, simply due to the sand factor.

And Particle, we did shuttle Flat Pass and there were some fun spots, but halfway through when I asked when it started descending, everyone gave me a very quizzical look. I was just expecting something different I guess.

And yeah, I agree in a few cases with regards to roadies being assholes, but can't agree wholeheartedly since I mostly am a roadie.

Sand sucks those sand pit crossing on slickrock are the suck, well some of them you can surf but sand is the worst riding surface ever.

IMHO - Poison Spider has some really fun riding. Some crappy sand sections depending on season and a lot of sand up at the top if you ride the lollypop and descend poison spider also.

but why, oh, why would you descend that when you could descend gold bar rim (oh yeah - because the road out sucks) or portal. if you ride up poison spider, enjoy the playspots, and ride out portal, you've had a pretty cool little ride.

then again, my roadie buddies hate portal... so....

Burro pass has been closed for a few weeks is what we were told though the snow doesn't look too bad from a distance. Hazard county was $$$$ on tuesday morning (10/23) and as of saturday afternoon there hadn't been any new precip.

I was an asshole before I was roadie, thank you very much. My brother was definitely an asshole before he became a pro roadie. I think, though, that roadies themselves aren't inherently asshole-ish. Racers on the other hand, well they are intense and poorly socialized. I asked a pro racer what the deal was with the cliche racer attitude and he explained it perfectly -

"We bust our ass in an obscure sport where we get no attention, no spotlight and no understanding about why we do it."

That is a really funny almost sad story phil. Especially the part about not doing porcupine.

BTW, I love Flat Pass, in fact, whenever I bring a newbie to Moab that is usually their introductory ride and it is a good ride for people of differing abilities to have fun on. You do have to cut out the road part of the ride and you might as well shuttle the little hill though, I agree with particle on that.

I disagree - Poison Spider is in fact, a blast to ride. On a motorcycle.

some people just don't know how to read. some people like to read things INTO other peoples' posts.

    which one applies to you?

hint: see Don Rickles, Denis Leary. or don't. I don't care. I don't post to earn your favor.

and roadies are bigger assholes than I am, of course. because I'm not a roadie any more.

the real problem is asking for "spotlight"

when you do something for someone else's approval, you will always be dis-satisfied.

okay, that's the end of my serious comments. (that was for rotorhead's benefit)

most competitive roadies are Type A Extreme +++. they would compete with you in every possible endeavor if they could. obviously they have a need to win. obviously that need isn't limited to road cycling.

I think that's the kind of personality that road racing attracts. I don't know why. maybe it has something to do with the fact that every second offers a new opportunity to "beat" someone when you're on a road ride.

I suppose some elite XC MTB racers are very similar, as well as some elite nordic ski racers and the odd chess player.

poison spider was probably one of my favorite rides down there, second to amassa.... i hit it when it was raining down there, however, so the sand had solidified a bit. i disliked slickrock very much, but I really liked those two rides... almost thought about portal, but the guidebook scared me off... i had a blast coming back down though... if it wasn't for the jeeps... they kinda ruined the rhythym... hint... don't hit popular trails during jeep safari weekend

But you get to drink, smoke, and dont have to count calories, and keep body fat to 5%.

I ride a road bike more than a mountain.....but am not a roadie. Roadies can be downright odd, it is more than riding a road bike (but I do think a 5 ride day sounds fun......)
