Thanks everyone for the tips on how to turn. It's getting better, looking where you what to go (duh) and "steering with the hips" helps a lot. The limiting factor seems to be steepness in the turn... encountered a couple switchbacks where more bike savvy people said you have to do that hopping thing with the back wheel and I'm more than happy to just walk around those.
nice ride today. man friend arriving:
man friend showing off
and cruising back down
myself also kind of cruising

re: switchbacks - Swing slightly high just before the entrance then dive in and bring the rear around kind of like how you flip your ski tails around on a drift.
Man friend is allergic to helmets?
Get lower, you're standing high on the bike. It's ok to stand up on the pedals obviously but drop your CG, it will stabilize things and allow you to corner more powerfully, kinda like "bend zee knees"

I wasn't wearing it either for going up. The typical thing here is you do one big climb and one big descent. In this case it was three hours up a gravel road with zero traffic (bikes or cars), at about walking/jogging speed because the road was relatively flat (usually the gravel roads are steeper and I'd be much faster walking than on the bike). I kind of figure if I have to wear the helmet for that I should wear it walking as well. Terrible idea? Obviously I don't purposely increase my chances of falling over backwards by attempting wheelies.

Fair enough, long dirt road climbs can get pretty warm.

Some nice weather in the 802 for riding this weekend.
Saturday in Chittenden County, much improved drainage has made this zone fun to ride
Rode from the house Sunday for a 10 mile loop, the usual 2200' of climbing [and descending] ensued

Why did I race the butte 100 again last weekend? I don't know. It wasn't any easier than last time. And so damn hot. Slogging up a huge climb when it's 90 and you've already done over 10k vertical kind of sucks.
Actually almost ended up on the podium despite being like 3 hours behind the winner. Lot of dnfs.

[QUOTE=meter-man;4781134]Did a new loop in South Lake Tahoe. I stopped taking pics halfway through because it was too scenic and the downhill was too good. Those are problems I'll take any day.
[attempt #2 at posting pics...]
I know this sounds dorky but that's a nice looking multi use trail build right there. I'm involved locally here with the advocacy group and trail building so I notice and appreciate things like this ride/walk option built into the trail. Whoever built that does good work.dirtbag, not a dentist

I'm a rock guy, but the shape of the horns and the orbits say bison to me. But we were all a little hesitant to say that, because free-ranging bison haven't been on top of that range for a long time. On the other hand, that ice mound may not melt that far every year, and the last day of July is probably close the the end of the melting season. That cave is carpeted with large bones: femurs, scapulae, ribs, pelvises, etc. Mountain lions can come in the way we did, but any big ungulate falling in the shaft isn't coming out.
