Aspen bike shop rec's?
I have some stuff on my bike that needs some attention but my stand and most of the tools I'll need for it are still at my parents house. Any aspen mags know which bikes shops are good? I've heard some pretty mixed reviews on some of them.

Not a local, but from what I've heard, Ute Mtn in Carbondale is good.

For service I've been using Gene Taylors up in Snowmass. I've heard good things about Ute too.

What is it with bike shops in this town? Four shops in town and nobody has a freakin bearing press. I took it to one shop and all the dude could do was talk about how many bearings it had - a whopping 8. Doesn't every non-single suspension bike have a lot of pivot bearings??

I've heard good things about Ajax in Carbondale, but Ajax in Aspen sucks. I'm really not very impressed with anything in town.
What do you need done? There used to be a guy with his own operation that did top notch work. Pricey, but if its something important, it was worth it. I'll see if I can find his number.__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ________________

I can no longer recommend Aspen Velo since Jason left. New guy wanted to replace my brake pads instead of cleaning and torching them. He told me new pads were the only way. BS!
Ajax does decent work, but charges a lot. Ute City built my wheel wrong and kept the spare parts. The Hub is a rip off. If I had to go somewhere, I'd go to Basalt Bike and Ski.Last edited by funkendrenchman; 05-30-2012 at 06:58 PM.

I'll vouch for Basalt bike & ski also. They've done a nice job with some of the work I've sent them (wheel truing/tensioning, brake bleeds).
In general I think bike shops around here have found their best customer is the wealthy 50+ rec rider on a $9k Colagno that sees 200 miles a year and those guys are a lot easier to deal with than avid riders.

I second Ute Mtn. in Carbondale. As an aside, you have the greatest name in TGR history.

This valley is tough. It really depends what you are having done. If its normal stuff, then Gene Taylors, Aloha, Ute, Basalt Bike and Ski...they are all great. However, I have yet to find a competent shop in this valley that has a clue on suspension or anything DH related. I send anything like that to Mojo Wheels in Denver. Would love to see someone "step up" and work on suspension, but maybe shops just don't handle that stuff anymore.

I would agree with that. As someone that just bought a downhill bike I was thinking to myself where I would get it serviced in town if (when) I break something. No where popped out. Like you said, I'd either take it to Mojo or where I got the bike, Grassroots in GJ.
I was wandering around town the other day and noticed a Session 88 at The Hub. I was talking to the guy about it saying I was surprised they carried it. Apparently they will also be selling body armor (POC). So perhaps there's hope there.
Like it was said earlier, the market here doesn't seem to focus on the gravity fiends. If Snowmass gets bigger, hopefully, maybe??
Until then, I'm glad I have knowledgeable friends. There are two rules to life...

I'll quadruple Basalt Bike & Ski. I haul our bikes down there every spring.

Grassroot Cycles is GJ is the bomb! If I'm headed that way, James gets my bikes for sure. If its Denver for work, then Mojo.
