    skis on a plane

Not to be confused with snakes on a plane....

So how do I fly my skis across the country? anyone have a preferred bag? I assume I have to check them? If so is there any need to unmount the bindings for added protection? and are there any bags out there that will hold more than one pair of skis? I have 3 pairs that I wouldnt mind bringing, but could settle with only bringing 2 pairs if thats all i could get in one bag.

    Thanks

if you care about the bases and edges use lots of straps and leave plenty of wax on them

Most of us just buy new ones when we get there. Carrying them with you is such a hassle.

I love how stupid questions get turned into jokes.

"How do I fly my skis across the country?"

on a plane, wrapped in t-shirts and towels, then a ski bag. Make it super heavy, so the luggage-keeper doesn't throw them around.

With 3 pairs, you should just buy a Thule box and check it in.

There is a good chance that three set of skis would be over the weight limit for checked bags.. Be nice to the agent and you might not have to pay the extra fee.

I have a Head bag which can carry four pairs of skis, padded and with whells. 3 pairs of skiis in the bag is just under the weight limit.

Cheap ski bags are available at STP. Get one with wheels, but many cheap bags will not fit two pair of fat skis. If you are into skis with at 75mm waist, then don't worry.

Watch weight, keep it under 50lbs, or be prepared to get hit with extra fees.

PM Gear makes a nice padded bag, big enough to use as a bivy sac.

thanks man, 2 are 100mm+, one is 78mm, Bringing all 3 would be ideal but i could live with just bringing one of my fat pairs if it would mean i wouldnt be snyped by extra fees. Does anyone have any experience with the dakine bags? I love their packs/bike case, but does the bag have enough padding? Protection is my #1 concern

Dakine Concourse bags are fairly bomber. The double bag will easily hold three pair.

....get one of these and you never have to worry about baggage handlers damaging your boards.

i managed to find one for about 50% regular price mid-summer last year, so there are deals to be had on them online.

Buy the Dakine double concourse wheeled thingy...

If you take the bindings off a pair, and pack nothing else in there, you should meet the requirements.

Internationally, it gets a little tougher on weight. Ex, when you reach NZ, you have to re-check into Domestic and they usually re-weigh all the bags.

Tips - Domestic, use curbside and tip well, and make sure they can see you're going to tip well. Also, if you have high status with any one pariticular airline, the higher the status usually the higher the weight limit and can bring extra luggage at no charge.
