    PSA: headset press $35ish

    Nashbar headset press, $39:
    http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?s...TOKEN=90591953

    Code "JUN10" for 10% off = around $35.

I bought one. After years of installing headsets with a block of wood and a mallet, I thought it might be time to actually get the right tool for the job.

while its nowhere near as nice, you can make your own headset press by going to home depot and buying a peice of threaded rod, a handful of steel washers the right diameter, and a few jamnuts.

    probably 10$ in materials.

It sounds great in theory but I've never gotten a headset to seat properly that way. Seems like you'd need a piece of threaded rod 1 1/8 diameter to keep it centered.

I've had more success with a rubber mallet than with that system. I did use it to finally seat the cups tightly once in though. Before I got a headset press that is..

did you stack up the washers so that it made a nice seat inside the bearing cups to keep everything square when pressing?

kinda like what you said about needing a 1 1/8" diameter rod, but instead just using the OD of the washer and then using a few jamnuts to hold everything together nice and tight on one end.

press one in first, then flip it over and do the other side.

sorry if that doesnt make much sense.

I had something similar to that but the washers would bind up against the cup sleeves. I got too frustrated with the setup but I guess I could have gotten something that worked with a little more tenacity on my part.

I just bought the right tool though

The idea of me trying to drill a straight centered hole down a dowel rod with no drill press or lathe makes me laugh.

Oh yeah, well your face makes me laugh.

So say you've got a crooked hole running the length of the dowel (or I misunderstood how a long a piece you meant.....I'm thinking the length of the headtube)

That would cause your big washers to be misaligned when pressing the cups in and increase the chances of starting the cups in crooked. The threaded rod wouldn't be centered.

I've been telling my GF that for years.

But I have a headset press now

So rather than admit the shortcomings of my inferior system I tried for so long, I'm going to keep saying 'neener neener' to all you guys coming up with better home made systems than mine.
