    Wow.

So today I decided to splurge and rented a full on 8" DH rig (Norco A-Line) for the second day of Mammoth's bike park being open.

I've ridden 4 and 5 inch "trail" bikes a lot, and they certainly smooth things out more than my hardtail, but this was a completely new experience. I obviously jumped on some harder trails, but even my usual trails were night and day on this bike.

Suddenly, pinning it down the fall line is no longer "OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT" - rather the bike is cool and calm, sucking up every little bump as if it were nothing. Bigger terrain was also easier to ride and I didn't have to tuck way back over the rear wheel.

If anyone is bored and hasn't had the opportunity yet (and of course if you live near a lift served area), go rent a big bike for a day. If I wasn't moving, I'd be looking at buying one right now.

yeah, the darkside grabbed me three years ago....

just go with it, and buy a 7 or 8" freeride bike with a couple of gears up front...can ride it anywhere...

    Righto!

Geometry is more important than suspension. And suspension setup is more important than the exact number of inches.

A good slack head angle and low BB really help just about anybody to rip down the mountain
