Joby Gorillapod Mini-Tripod/Grip Reviews?

I remember seeing this tri-pod in someone's trip report. Anyone use it? It looks pretty cool. Reviews?

I've never used one, but I always see people raving about them on photo blogs and Flickr. It is towards the top of my list of things to get for my camera. For not a lot of money you get something that seems to add a lot of fun, creativity, and versatility to your photography. Also, I imagine I would be more likely to carry it around than my normal tripod.

I almost got one of those, but there is a weight limit and for a SLR with a heavy lens it didn't seem like it would work well.

But for a smaller camera or P&S I have heard they are great.

There is an SLR long lens version now. I am getting one soon. Will post review.

The price of experimenting isn't that high... get one and review it for yourself!

I've never used a Gorillapod but the REI Ultrapod II is my favorite photo accessory ever. It's kind of/sort of similar in application.

Well said. Didn't realize how not expensive they were and actually just happened to see them when looking at your aforementioned Ultrapod. Will report back!

I have one and like it. The only drawback is the locking function which I can't rotate with my fingers.

I've got the biggest one and it is legit! I love the thing, and trust it to hang my slr with $800 telephoto on it on just about anything. Fun little gadget with lots of fun new possibilities for taking shots, goes great in combination with a shutter release cable.

Hey Brice - - do you mean you got the SLR-zoom one (http://www.rei.com/product/753300)? As opposed to the plain SLR one (http://www.rei.com/product/749128)?

Here was one reviewer comment on the zoom version:

Unlike the regular gorillapod the zoom doesn't come with a moveable head. So you are kind of stuck with horizontal format unless you get a tripod head.

Basically, I just need to decide to get the zoom or the standard SLR version. My biggest lens would be a 70 - 300 mm telephoto.

I have the Zoom, and thus far it has performed flawlessly...

I've used it with my K10d and Sigma 180/3.5 Macro (pretty freakin' big). No probs so far, and I've used it for like a year now.
