Painting Skis Thread (part 2): 2007 Edition
Or, "How to make old skis new to you again..."
Here is a link to the original painting skis thread, but I wanted to start a new one for 2007...
I painted my Pocket Rockets today.
I lightly sanded the topsheets, but didn't really do any other prep to them. I just used a standard white spray paint and finished them up with a spray on clear coat. The only thing I kept from the original graphics was the black Salomon logo on each ski. Bye bye robots...
Laying on the first coat, using my trusty jack stands...

The before and after:

Paint is drying and the masking tape over the old logo is removed:

Paint is dry, some stickers added and bindings replaced. The PR's are ready for one more season before they are totally worked...

My total expense for the paint was about 6 bucks. I know that using cheap paint will be problematic in the future with chipping, and using white will make chipping much more obvious, but honestly on this old pair of skis, that wasn't a big deal to me.
My quiver now:

Yeah well, like I said, they are old skis anyway.

Oh, and by the way - when I was out painting today, I sunburned the back of my neck a little bit. So I am, in fact... a redneck.

Did you clearcoat over the taped section, or leave it taped for that step? I would bet it lasts longer if you take the tape off and clearcoat the whole thing.

You know, I actually clear coated it before I removed the tape. I didn't really think about that at the time. I can always spray a little on the logo area.

I like the new look, I especially like them in white. The J-Hole sticker also looks quite nice up there.

i tried my hand at it!
i wanted a new look for my park skis, so i decided to try some paint. all i had at home was gold spray paint, didnt want to go out and buy some so thats why i used! i sanded the topsheet pretty good before my first coat. it took me a while to tape off the caution tape and scratch man but i wanted it to look as good as possible. i put on 4 layers of gold, sanding in between each. after that i put on 2 layers of clear coat. i think they turned out great! paint feels solid too

I may have to try my hand at disguising a pair of my skis. Do you think regular spray paint will work with a couple coats of clear coat?

Did you clear coat over the stickers, too?
I put some stickers on my skis and they started peeling off fairly quickly. No longer stuck.

Picked up some thrice drilled 179 bro blems for a new tele rig, but they had this hideous fiberglass topsheet! Started with this:
And ended with this:
My process: Taped off the sides/bases, sanded the snot out of them with 180 grit (wearing a respirator in a painting hood), laid down 3 layers of Krylon Fusion white for a base coat (sanding with 600 grit sandpaper in between coats), hand painted the graphics on with standard acrylic paints and a paintbrush, then threw about 8 coats of Krylon clear coat on top (no sanding between coats). Dried overnight, mounted the next day. Seems like a sturdy coat, but we'll see with some days on them!Last edited by gholman12; 02-13-2009 at 07:09 PM.

My girlfriend hates the flower design on the K2 Phat Luvs so I was thinking of creatively repainting or respraying them without taking the bindings off.

Dare I ask..what kind of bindings are those? Are those for Dynafit boots?
If I hear anyone say anything about jong...I might have to scroll down further to get past your complaints. So lets keep this efficient.

Isn't there a TV show you can go on where a gay guy comes and does a makeover of your skis with stuff easily bought around the house?
If not, you should do it. Spray paint. On skis. That's going to work awesome.
