    TR Grays Peak 2007-5-8

So if you start at the highway and ski from the top, is it ethical? I'll tell you what it is - FAR!!! 9 miles, 4600 vert, summit at 14,270, according to Dawson. Sheesh.

In the morning there was snow all the way down to the truck about 100 yards in on the dirt road, but by afternoon, I had to take my skis off in a few places on the way back.

I've been up that way to ski Torreys several times, and always looked at Grays as the ugly stepsister. I was thinking of skiing the Lost Rat, which is a really nice line. But the rare chance to ski the north face with powder, top to bottom, was irresistable.

    Cool run down Kelso

Maybe LB can identify this track in the snow, some kind of cat? I saw rabbit tracks everywhere and hope this fella got some dinner.

And this tree, why is it stripped of all its bark?

The trailhead proper is buried in snow

So Grays is the sixth 14er I've soloed. Good times.

    Nice Mir!

As for the tracks…no idea. They're awfully symetrical  maybe a lynx/bobcat? My guess on the tree is a porky.

With that hat/pants combo you're gonna give 666 a run for his money as best dressed maggot.

Welcome back girl. We went up Bard yesterday.NWS said mostly couldy with a 20% chance of snow. It had to be the nicest mostly cloudy day I've ever seen.

    Sweet pics.

Nice job. I've always thought of Grays as the ugly stepchild, too, though like most 14ers it has its moments, like the lost rat. Yesterday's wet snow was a tough task to trailbreak solo, at least for me on Columbia.

My guess on the stripped tree - porcupine. Have seen that before and asked an USFS dude about it. Can any mamologist(sp?) mags back this up?

    Very nice!

Looks like it's going to be quite a while before you can drive to the trailhead.

How did the goatfinger couloir look? Filled in?

    Thanks. The weather was perfection.

I don't know that one? I took a ton of pics, maybe I have it.

Those of you admiring my hat, one of my Argentinian friends made it for me. For next year she's working on a striped dayglo pink, orange, and green. It will make your eyes bleed.

Here's a pic from the summit of Kelso in late May of '05 with the goat finger (Mt. Edwards) in the background. It's been on my list for a while. Have yet to see it filled in enough to make some turns.

I don't know about those little kitty tracks...

But these are definitely the tracks of a hungry cougar!

    Good job,

Here's what I've got - sorry I don't have anything head on, but I seem to remember that being filled in. Is that the Remarkables?

Nice Shera. Looks eerily desolated up there for some reason.

The pack looks to holding well considering the heat it's been going through.

Only 6? Why was I thinkin you were way ahead of that? - You been doin the same one repeatedly (like I end up doin)?

Thanks for the pics/beta. It does appear to be filled in. Not sure if it's the Remarkables or not.

Here's a pic of Edwards and the Goatfinger from Bard taken 5-8-07. Edwards is looking good from the top on it's own.
