Cool TR: Long Board Day Spec-tac-U-lar Alpental, WA 4.14.2007

Once upon a time, it was all about the cm’s. Racing was cool, freestyle was freestylin, and winter apparel never looked so HOT.

At Alpental on Saturday April 14 we paid homage to a timeless day in skiing’s Golden Age where Long Boards ruled, pastel was in, and extreme skiing was born.

    Date:
April 14th, 2007 @ The home of recycled Ski Wear
    Alpental, WAaaaarshington

Our somewhat not but yet unofficial sponsors:

and a really nifty time machine we found in the dumps outside of North Bend

    Weather:
Classic Waarrrshington weather- a little rain, a little snow, and some fresh wet powder

    Team 80’s & 90’s:

Squirrel99 – director, Greydon Clark- Chairman of the Board, BenWA- 215 bump specialist, BC-Flow- stylist, Zee-mutherfuggin-Harkin Banks-Dash-Bo, Shin-to-Winning Kevin Andrews, Mindoc- ‘the real’ kevinandrews, PHILLLLLL!, Dug, Sponsored by No-dO(ze)DIN, Ol’MossBack, Oft Piste, Buster Highman on the injured reserve and host of other characters.

    Music Sponsor:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtqymYOQeQQ

Waking up in the morning, things looked a bit different out on the deck

Nope, those don’t look like Gotamas

Classic Washington Weather predicted 2500 foot freezing levels and snow. About 4 miles from the Summit- it was looking like a classic retro day

While the rain subsided and changed to snow flurries, we took the important opportunity to prepare for a LONG day

It was generous of the Summit to breakout their new grooming machine for our special day

BenWA and I took a scouting run. Light rain changed over to snow midway up the Armstrong Express. A BC lap yielded a foot of fresh wet glop, the perfect recipe for a challenging long boarding day. Time to get the gang together for the initial ascent.

BC-Flow wants to go here! THE INTERNATIONAL RUN

BenWA gets things going with a nice sequence

    Good form!

Whoops, these are 215 DH Boards!

The start of a LONG day

But for now, “Fragile” is happy

An 80’s movie star graced us with his presence. It was kind of Harkin Banks (Patrick Houser) of Hot Dog fame to show us how it’s done.

He even scoped out a cliff line for us

    Looks good to me

Squirrel 99 throws a horrible spread eagle over the rocks!!!

    BC-Flow getting after International

Chairman of the day, Greydon Clark, shows us all how it’s done. After all, he only skis THE INTERNATIONAL RUN!!!

OMG! Look at those bumps. All 2300 vertical feet on 210cm+

Let's try those on 215 DH Boards
BumpWA on DH Boards, tape delayed for your viewing pleasure

    Cool LONG Board day cont'd

Odin fresh from two hours of sleep, and 2.5 hour drive from Portland

    Sq99 car car car carving

    BenWA starts to redeem himself

    Greydon Clark somewhat amused

    BC-Flow still in a state of [drunken]confusion

Ohhh, that’s how you do it?

    Excellent!

Like a cat getting thrown out the window

The ‘real’ Kevin Andrews makes an impromptu arrival
    Mindoc shredding the gnar

    Squirrel steering the TNC’s

After returning from a secret BC session with String Theory, Zbo gets busted by Kevin Andrews for skipping the long boards today (hurt knee- so feel free to drop the weak sauce comments)

    And so does Shmerham

While we wait for the sunshine, first a message from some of our sponsors:

    Fireball with BC-Flow

    Ernest Gallo & Odin

Almost Birthday Time Zbo with The second tier “Radness”

Our makeshift shrine to the Long Board Gods in hopes of sunshine seems to be working

Just as we were leaving for another round, we spotted custom made twin tip Dynamic VR27 Long Boards!

Though we weren’t sure Phill was Shakespeare or a Pimp? We’ll default to pimp for the custom long board effort- a first in Long Board History.

But we will deduct 5 points for pants stuck in the car

As we move back to the slayer-fest, BenWA creates a Slurpee out of Felsen

Ol’ Mossback drove all the way from Ferndale to charge!!!

    Ouch!

Notice the similarities of BC-Flow & Greydon Clark?

“Heh, Heh, Uhh...What are you looking at, Asshat?”

Odin tries a spread eagle LONG jump to Mount Snoqualmie

Shin-to-Win & BC-Flow attempt to practice their synchronized ski techniques from a football field apart

    Not that way!

    Better!

    Cool Con'td

Shin-to-Win – errr, I mean Kevin Andrews picks a spicy line through the Fan, complete with cheering section above

Phill makes it through, cape unscathed

Odin takes lil’ air displaying proper form

Please do not hurt the camera man! Falling Est Ver Boten…

Ol’ Mossback getting in on the Fan action

    Dug CARVING!

A shout out was called for Shot 6: A steep double-fall line chute. Only a few followed:

But Shin-to-Win knows how to handle these long boards in tight situations

It’s tight in here? Just seems that way on 215’s

Look at him arc those boards!

We think he’s been secretly training for LBD. Have a look for yourself

    Odin SLAYS Shot 6-6-6

    How about another view?

Phill, minus the B Squads and Plus the LBD twin tips

He makes the White Cliffs stand out

Yo! Check out me runaway planks

    Ol’ Mossback, Zbo, BC-Flow

BenWA getting in touch with his inner radical on Adrenaline Face

Unbelievable that Greydon used to ski in these pants- with THESE ORIGINAL TICKETS!

There was actually a time when Vail cost $42.00?

Squirrels fall downhill backwards when confronted by angry trees

    PHILLL!

BenWA just screams red white and blue

Finally a grill made it up to the Shot 10 lot [Don’t touch my Tofu you hippee!]

    BC-Flow rocking the chunder BALLS

And check out that aggressive bump steeze!

    Ol’ Mossback feeling the Pow-DUR!

    BC-Flow ridge running

BEER! CHAMPAGNE! WINE! LIQUOR! Key ingredients to fight the rain

    Cool Fin!

    BC-Flow showing off “the point”

Squirrel thinks this is the 80’s

Greydon can’t get enough of these mogul things

Phill wants to glade ski in the powder

    BC-Flow enjoys powDuR!

    Yes Please!

    No thEnnnnnk Yewwww!

    Shin-to-Win finds untracked slop heaven

    Just Heavenly!

Before it all goes to Hell!

    OOOF!

Shot 6 to Base, Kevin Andrews is down

“Excuse me. Do you Long Board?”

“Why Yes. Yes Sir, I do”

Next year, we’re getting some of these

Um, yeah. That day was fun. Quadrupling attendance this year – we will not stop until we take over the world next year!

Healing vibes to BenWa- who despite the awesome steeze, was the lone casualty of the event with a separated shoulder. Much touring to be done when you’re back on snow in June. The Pacific Northwest Long Boarding Division wishes you a speedy recovery.

We now pass the torch back to our Long Boarding World Headquarters in Kirkwood, KALI-FORN-I-EH for Saturday’s event.

Seis Seis Seis & Company – on with the show.

100 bonus points to Greydon for the fluorescent orange camo jacket. I've always wanted one of those.

200 bonus points to BenWA for the Schmidt steeze.

300 bonus points to BC and Ol Moss for wearing jeans in the rain.

200 bonus points to Shin for clothing with triangles.

1,000 bonus points for skiing any of those lines drunk

-100 for champagne in the cooler. The only champagne that belongs in there is the Champagne of Beers.

-1,000,000 to anyone who "participated" on less than 210s.

It was hard to choose any one because there was a serious multitude of most excellent ones so here's just an example:

Awesome. Long boards are the reason behind my continued back-seat racer steeze today. And a few blown knees.

+1000 points for Z-bo skiing drunk with a pack full of beer and that bottle of champaign all day Sunday.

Damn Ben, impressive skiing on the DH boards. But 2/2 at Alpental, I do believe the area owes you an apology. Or vise-versa. Heal up quick man.

Most of you guys look like you're trying to invoke the '80s, but BenWA actually looks like he was plucked straight from the '80s. Nice work!
